Because everyone was suspecting her for the Series Finale and Season 8 was renewed at that point. A voice over wouldn't have required her much time to do if she really did do it and people were talking more about her actual physical showing up to film something.

I think it's going to be a huge slap in the face for her fans if she doesn't return for the finale, especially since everything the show has done for her career.
I really don't doubt at all that we won't see her though. But perhaps i'm putting too much faith into Nina..
