Elijah Wood? Why? (spoilery perhaps)

What was the point of his character? I found him sorely underused and a bit pointless. I understand that she needed soundingboards but Beth, and the weed guy weren't enough? she needed a guy she worked with too? I always thought something was going to happen with him by the end but nothing does. He's open ended.

I found the film enjoyable to an extent but didn't like that Jesse's part of the story was half baked and watered down. I hoped they were going to be equal characters. The film is called "Celeste and Jesse..." not "Celeste and sometimes Jesse" he was a second rate character while she was the star. I wanted to see his side of this story as well and I felt by the end it really was about her coming to terms with their break up but not really him. I wish it had gone a step further with him. About half way through I wondered if we were really supposed to root for Celeste and hate Jesse because of how distant I felt his part was. I didn't laugh as much as I wanted to. I understand that it's not reality but I didn't believe their love as much as I wanted to. I'm supposed to believe their amazing friendship and connection was based on mutually masturbating objects that look like penises and speaking with fake German accents? I hoped for more.

Ohhhh I agree I couldn't stand the part where they were talking in fake accents and masturbating random small objects, it was so obviously thrown in to show some little quirky thing they do together that I suppose we're supposed to find cute and sweet. Just made me cringe.

Also I didn't love Elijah Wood's character and when he was like 'I'm just trying to be your sassy gay friend' I was just like ohhhhh no please shut up, so cringy!

I didn't necessarily think we were supposed to root for Celeste all the time, she obviously had extreme problems accepting she was ever wrong, and I loved when Emma Roberts character slammed her down and told her she thought she was smarted then everyone else and it was her downfall, because it was so true.

Overall I thought it was a really good, against the grain, rom com - there were just a few little things that didn't fit for me.

Elijah just came off creepy to me, like he was a secret serial killer. lol it was weird.

yeah I didn't get him either. I couldn't understand whether he was actually gay or whether he was sort of making the joke off of the whole stereotype of "every girl has a gay best friend".

A friend of mine who said it seemed to think that he liked her, but she had told him that he was more a "gay best friend" type figure and so as a bit of an in-joke he kept referencing that. Just my thoughts anyway. Like, when the singer (Riley was it?) turned out to be a gay icon he didn't seem to be too aware of it.

It's weird because this is the second film where he portrays a gay friend that has Ari Graynor in it, the other being For A Good Time Call. It almost felt like a deja vu. Also, both films released around the same time so I'm guessing it's some sort of inside joke or something. Because Elijah and Chris Pine certainly were wasted in the film. I bet had they been one of Celeste's dates that would be more memorable.

The gay friend in "For A Good Time Call..." was actually played by Justin Long, not Elijah Wood.

Elijah Wood's character was there for comedic purposes, I found his little additions entertaining.
