The biggest surprise in the movie for me
When she asks him "Do you love her?" and he answers "Yes".

I didnt see that coming either. Her character isnt developed much, to the audience she's hardly more than a pretty face, so perhaps its hard for us to see why he would love her.
plus I'm way biased towards Rashida Jones anyway, no other girl has much of a chance in my mind haha

I'm glad he said yes. I didn't want to see them get back together, they just needed closure. Considering the situation with Veronica and them spending so much time together, I'd find it hard to believe that he hadn't fallen in love with her at that point.
shareBut, you really only see two examples of their connection and everything else seems as if Jesse only stays because obligation. Both of those scenes is before he breaks the news about Veronica being pregnant, after that, Jesse hardly smiles. When they are together post baby revelation, Jesse and her have no real enjoyment in their scenes. So, yes, they spent time together, but I expect more joy in a few of their scenes to have me believe this than him just saying he is in love. We see way more joyful interaction between the engaged couple than we do Jesse and Veronica.
"And even with Will dead, the love triangle is not over."
The biggest surprise for me was, why didn't he ask for a DNA test or something. I would never believe that someone was pregnant, after only being w/ them once...oh and they need a green card??!! I kept wanting to Celeste to bring it up. I am still in shock. Did anyone else think that?
no
shareAgreed, after he said they needed to get married because of the visa thing I thought it would turn up sooner or later that she was playing him or something. Besides, I'm not very well-versed in immigration law, but I heard once that if you're having an american baby, then you can stay in the US, regardless of marriage status. I might be wrong tho.

WHAT THE FVCK IS A BIEBER????
American baby: called "anchor baby" there are rules about that issue now to make it tougher, but it is not clear cut, b/c this is a gray area. But, if I had been Jessie, I would have at least requested a DNA test. He clearly did not love her like he loved Jessie. She did seem to be good for him though.
shareAgreed, Celeste was the love of his life, but she wasn't good for him, as long as she was there he didn't seem to want to grow up, and Victoria helped him (maybe forced him, unintentionally) to grow up.

Do you think an educated Dutch person needs to marry some dude to get a green card? Lol
shareMany people marry for green cards, it has nothing to do w/ education/looks/etc...I was throwing out an inconsistency that most "real world" individuals would consider. If I had been Celeste, I would ask Jesse, "does she have a green card and have you thought about DNA testing before jumping into a life-long commitment w/ a stranger".
Veronica was Belgian, her middle name was Dutch.
I might have been born yesterday, but I stayed up all night...
Yes. That's what I thought. I actually thought she was faking it for the marriage and green card.
shareTotally agree. I thought Veronica was completely undeveloped and there was nothing along the way to give us a hint that Jesse was actually falling in love with her.
The whole relationship seemed to be based on the fact she had become pregnant after a one night stand and frankly that isn't a recipe for long term success.
On the other hand Celeste seemed to have learned from her past mistakes and come to appreciate Jesse for who he was both positive and negative.
It made no sense to me that these two characters who were so obviously still in love did not try to make things work.
I don't think if the film had ended with them getting back together it would have been cliche at all - even given the complicated circumstances. Stoopid ending to an otherwise enjoyable film.

I think he still loved Celeste as well. But I think it was possible that he also loved Veronica. I'm sure her being the mother of his child was partly that...but maybe she was also more supportive of him. As he said to Celeste he thought there was a part of her that wanted him to not change or grow.
We accept the love we think we deserve

a lot of people fall in love pretty quickly. life is very short in itself.
shareYou're not wrong but I think the issue a lot of people are having with this movie is that there was nary a hint of a scene illustrating that Jesse was actually falling in love with her.
The whole movie was a love triangle but only two points of the triangle were fully explored. I don't think it's surprising that Jesse seemingly professing genuine love for this, at best, side character was out of the blue to most.
I liked that about the movie. You see it all from Celeste's point of view. Why would she be there for intimate moments to see them fall in love? The audience feels as unresolved and as doubtful of their love as she does (as most people who aren't over an ex, whom is with someone else, feels).
They were in love and amazing friends. But they weren't good for each other. They were better people apart.
For some reason it didn't surprise me when he said he loved her.
In the scene where they run into each other in the bookstore you can see there was a connection there. Then he was gone for a few weeks, spending time with her and i'm led to believe that the connection develops into something more.
The last time he was with Celeste was awful and i'm sure at that point he knew he didn't have a future with her and he needed to move on.
A rebound perhaps it is.
The biggest surprise for me was how good Andy Samberg was in it. He should do more movies like this!
