Jesse and Veronica
I really enjoyed the movie and even the ending, for the most part, but Jesse being in love with Veronica doesn't feel true to me, it's like something he's convinced himself that he feels. I believe he was interested in her, but he wasn't in love with her like he claimed.
Let's keep in mind that he only went out with her again, presumably, to "move on" as well as punish Celeste. Although Celeste was an enabler, Veronica comes off better because she didn't have to put up with Jesse's slacker ways for YEARS. So, it feels good not to get criticism, right, and whatever he feels is heightened by that acceptance. But, all throughout the movie, he never says that he's with Veronica because he wants to be and he loves her, no he says that he's with her because he has to make it work for the child and he's marrying so she can get a green card. Only at the end does he say that he's in love and it's not even believable. Nothing in his voice, eyes, not even a little smile. Oh, and Jesse also probably wanted to stay around because he believed Celeste didn't want to have his baby, but Veronica was.
I'm not saying that Jesse and Celeste had to get back together, but I just don't believe that Jesse was in love with Veronica. I do like Veronica, but Jesse doesn't seem to feel the feelings he claims.
I know that there are some others who say that we see this from Celeste's perspective, but I disagree. Most of Jesse's interaction with Veronica screamed of obligation and duty, not someone who was in love and enjoyed being with a woman who was also carrying his child. He smiled way more around Celeste, even after their relationship started to drift apart, than he did Veronica. Jesse even showed more enthusiasm for his child than being with Veronica. There were two times I bought his feelings for Veronica: when they bumped into one another at the bookstore and their lunch when he was ignoring Celeste. Other than that, he didn't seem happy.
"And even with Will dead, the love triangle is not over."
