This is supposed to be Oscar-worthy?

I heard a lot of complaining that "Straight Outta Compton" was stiffed at the Oscars.
I suppose some might find this entertaining -- but most will not.
It's dreary, depressing, and vulgar.
The main characters are self-indulgent, ruthless thugs. It was impossible for me to empathize with them.
Most of the problems in their neighborhoods stem from their own lawless behavior.
I can take about 10 minutes of Gansta Rap, and that's about it.

reply

So it's not Oscar worthy because it's not your typical white movie? Figures!

This movie showed a group of talented black men (not thugs or gangsters if you watched that movie), some of the founding fathers of rap and hip hop, who created groundbreaking music that helped them coup and escaped oppression from a bigot, ruthless, white society who viewed them as violent criminals instead of regular, peaceful civilans. It's shows what a certain race of people went through on a daily basis and what is still transpiring so I disagree, this deserved an Oscar!

reply

Yes, this group of black men had talent, but you may recall they were waving guns in the hotel. That makes them gangsters in my book. Also, the lyrics of their songs, while sometimes clever, were mostly profane to the point of being unlistenable. It's 25 percent genius, 75 percent garbage. The music is mostly not uplifting, and neither was this movie.
p.s.
I was surprised that this movie did so well at the box office. If found that out after writing my original review. I also mostly like Ice Cube as an actor, who produced this movie, and who was portrayed in this movie. "Barbershop" as corny as it is, and lightweight as it is, is to me more entertaining.

reply

No one mentioned race but you, bigot.

reply

silentmovie is not a bigot perhaps, you know him BLM? (just take the "L" outta the acronym...BM matters.).

The Godfather, one of my favorite movies, is also a movie about people being born in a rough situation and who use illegal, and violent, means to get out of it. The first movie and the second won Oscars for best picture.

reply

I saw "The Godfather." I know "The Godfather." "The Godfather" was a friend of mine.
"Straight Out of Compton" is no "The Godfather."

Very well put, silentmovie.

I finally watched Straight Outta Compton yesterday, had to see for myself what I thought. It certainly wasn't boring, and for the film I could appreciate the music. Good acting by all.

But it wasn't Oscar bait. Judging strictly as a movie, it was worth watching but not Oscar worthy.

VERY good point for me, who has been understanding diversity in Oscars but not for this AMos and Andy stereotype. It sets blacks AND women (by means of the outdated---even in the 1980s music world----sexism.)

NWA is a group of handpicked Uncle Tom's who stole rap music for the whiteman and encourage black people to fill prisons. Stop pretending they are hero's to black people

That was their life, which their music was a reflection of. Don't like the music, fine, everyone has their own taste. But these guys took their life experiences and used it to create, which a lot of great artists do.

The music is mostly not uplifting, and neither was this movie.

Since when did music, movies, or any artform have to be uplifting? And since this is a true story movie about the rise and fall of the group, of course this wasn't going to be uplifting, they had a harsh falling out in real life.

I was surprised that this movie did so well at the box office.

Uh, even if you don't like these guys, they brought a disrespected and mostly unknown genre to the mainstream, showed people a side of society they knew nothing about, and covered topics still relevant today. There's a reason they're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, these guys were a big artistic and cultural impact.

reply

That is some really weak understanding on your part, silentmovie.

reply

I thought this was an okay movie, but nothing really special.
