shareI wrote about whether they should release it here https://www.ftvbs.com/EfosaSO/m/112
Though she the new suicide Squad, it would be tough.
I was kind of on board with all of that Snyder Cut stuff. Mostly because I actually think Snyder is a pretty good filmmaker, due to Watchmen and his Dawn of the Dead remake. And while I didn't think the original cuts of Justice League and Batman V. Superman were good, really, I felt like I could at least see their potential to be good. I liked the serious tone he tried to stay with, the same he used in Superman, and it felt like he was an actual fan of these characters and put heart behind the movies, as opposed to just trying to make something flashy that sells.
But with Ayer? I dunno. Fury was okay, I guess. End of Watch was fine. But he never struck me as particularly good, really. Also, he seems to have a sort of style in his stuff that I don't find very fitting for a lot of things lol. It's wiggerish almost (for lack of a better word). Which, Ayer, himself, seems to be a bit of. The beginning of his letter (linked in the other commenters comment) even begins with him saying stuff like "My pops committed suicide Christmas morning" and "I was in South LA doing hoodrat shit as a kid" and "Got my ass beat by LAPD (batons yo)" lol. The guy sounds like Malibu's Most Wanted or Jesse in Breaking Bad. And those sort of urban influences are glaring in his work.
Which, admittedly, this works well in the correct context. With End of Watch, Bright, or the script for Training Day, for example. Because those stories are directly in need of that tone. But with Batman villains it just felt so weird and out of place, in my opinion. It's Gotham, not Baltimore. And it was stuff like that that I really didn't enjoy in the movie. And that particular stuff is clearly his vision (because it's apparent in his other work as well), regardless of how it was cut.
AYER IS A MUCH BETTER FILMMAKER THAN ZACK SNYDER...NOT EVEN CLOSE...I WON'T ADDRESS THE VAGUELY RACIST COMMENTS YOU MADE ABOUT AYER AND HIS STYLE AS THEY WERE INCORRECT ANYWAY.
shareQuoting Ayer is racist? TheGutterMonkey's posts are intelligent, yours are ALL CAPS.
shareNO...NOT AYER'S QUOTES...GUTTERMONKEY'S DESCRIPTIONS OF AYER'S STYLE,ETC.
shareThat's not racist. GutterMonkey struggled to put the right words to their thoughts but, was aware of that, and even pointed it out ("for lack of a better word"). The point was that GutterMonkey finds the dialog contrived and provided examples to support it.
Ayer doesn't talk like that in interviews. He even changed tone in the later half of the letter when he stopped talking about his youth. Personally I don't know what any of that has to do with the criticism of his movie. He's claiming to have this big secret that explains everything, but admits he'll never tell anyone about it. It's childish, keep your mouth shut or don't, but he tried to have both.
I AM FULLY ON BOARD...I AM ONE OF FEW WHO LIKED THE JACKED UP VERSION WE ENDED UP GETTING...I AM FULLY STOKED TO SEE DAVID AYER'S ACTUAL VISION.
shareI don't think making this movie more grim, grounded and serious would do it any favors. But I don't know how drastic the changes were. Is it just the tone or did have it an entirely different ending?
shareI think it would, because WB hired a director who likes making grim, grounded, and serious films. It makes sense to me that his grim, grounded, and serious cut would be superior to one changed at the last minute by the studio.
WB should be taking most of the criticism that has been launched at Ayer and Snyder for their studio-cut films. It's not like either director was unknown before getting their respective gigs. WB knew what type of films they made and were aware of what their strengths and weaknesses were. I don't believe for a second that the studio was blindsided by Ayer or Snyder's respective visions. Those visions are what got them hired. When it didn't pan out and it became clear that audiences wanted something different, the studios hacked up their work and ran them under the bus.
Gunn can sing WB's praises of artistic freedom all he wants. If it didn't pan out for him, they would have chopped up his movie and fed him to the wolves too.
