So nobody got that this was...

an 80's buddy cop movie? Smith made a straight 80's action comedy homage. From the Harold Faltermeyer score, the use of almost all 80's songs, the excessive profanity (like from 48hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, Tango & Cash) which we don't really get in action comedies anymore, the oafish, moronic rival cops (Pollack and Brody), and capped off with the ridiculously simple/overcomplicated plot (involving baseball cards, a USB drive, a daughter's wedding, and a potentially cheating wife), this was a GIANT 80's buddy cop movie. Take out the You Tube references, the cell phones and the USB stuff and this movie could have been made exactly as is and released in 1988 with Clint Eastwood in the Willis role and Damon Wayans in the Morgan slot. I think they even say the word "HOMAGE" like 10 times in the first 5 minutes.

COP OUT is a straight-up, no-holds-barred Kevin Smith 1980's buddy cop movie. Once that settled in, I was quite enjoying what it was trying to do. I can understand people not enjoying it, but I have to give Smith credit for being so original in making an intentionally derivative film. Look for more of this later this summer when The Expendables in completely misunderstood.

I'm confused. Why are you crediting the movie's premise to Smith when he didn't write this movie?

reply

because he's a Kevin Smith ball-washer that will defend this movie til the end. Maybe the original OP didn't get that it was.......... A CRAPPY MOVIE THAT NOBODY SHOULD SUPPORT!

i liked Avatar when it first came out, it was called Furngully The Last Rainforest.

"does it bother you that people call you a retard?"

reply

I definitely did. I really enjoyed the music and saw it was at least a take off or "homage" to Beverly Hills Cop, if nothing else. There were '80s cop references everywhere. For example:

Bruce Willis' character has thrown his shoe at Tracy Morgan, and asks for it back - not like in Die Hard when he was walking on broken glass with no shoes

the "Miami Vice" ringtone when Tracy Morgan's phone rang in the interrogation room

the newbie cop played by Adam Brody was totally modelled on Judge Reinhold's character in Beverly Hills Cop

THE MUSIC

etc. It was a really funny movie with obvious and subtle references to cop shows/movies from the '80s.

reply

Yeah I noticed how they used Homage a lot in the movie when I saw it last night.

No I got it. It just sucked ass.

Smith was making an 80's buddy cop movie homage

Except some of those 80's buddy cop movies were funny.

reply

As a fan of 80's movies, I got a lot of the jokes, and I thought the movie was very funny.

I laughed my ass off at a lot of parts in the movie. Good fun!

The scene with Paul punching the punk kid in the balls had me lolling heartily!

reply

Oh I understand what they were going for... it still does not make up for the fact that movie was pure garbage....

i could tell straight out with music and everything! kevin smith is amazing and this movie proves that so much more! no one that i know of has made a 80's buddy cop movie or any type of 80's movie in this day and age it was amazing to watch! and proves kevin smith can do more than just movies about jay and silent bob

will probally be the best comedy of the year just for the pure fact of how 80's he made it (i mean except for toy story 3 haha)

I actually loved this movie!
I laughed my ass of in the beginning when the homage part was, and Willis was saying every movie he acted out and when he yelled "YIPPIEKAYEE *beep* Willis just went "I didn't see that movie" :D

Anyway, I thought this movie was a fun flick, it wasn't anything special in any way it was just a great watch :) I gave it a 7/10 cause it succeeded in my opinion to be what it was supposed to be, a movie.

I wish i could tell you more, but [insert goverment/aliens/terrorists of choice] are listening!
