So nobody got that this was...

an 80's buddy cop movie? Smith made a straight 80's action comedy homage. From the Harold Faltermeyer score, the use of almost all 80's songs, the excessive profanity (like from 48hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, Tango & Cash) which we don't really get in action comedies anymore, the oafish, moronic rival cops (Pollack and Brody), and capped off with the ridiculously simple/overcomplicated plot (involving baseball cards, a USB drive, a daughter's wedding, and a potentially cheating wife), this was a GIANT 80's buddy cop movie. Take out the You Tube references, the cell phones and the USB stuff and this movie could have been made exactly as is and released in 1988 with Clint Eastwood in the Willis role and Damon Wayans in the Morgan slot. I think they even say the word "HOMAGE" like 10 times in the first 5 minutes.

COP OUT is a straight-up, no-holds-barred Kevin Smith 1980's buddy cop movie. Once that settled in, I was quite enjoying what it was trying to do. I can understand people not enjoying it, but I have to give Smith credit for being so original in making an intentionally derivative film. Look for more of this later this summer when The Expendables in completely misunderstood.

reply

agreed. my buddy and i were talking about this when we left the theater. the music gave it away. i was thrown off by it a lil at first, but once u understand why the music sounds the way it does, you can enjoy the movie for what it is. the stereotypical bad guy was quintessential 80's too. I love that it was Scarface from half-baked.

reply

Your so right......a movie that pays homage to films such as "Lethal Weapon 4", "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot", and "Turner and Hooch" should totally be given a chance...... its the classic buddy cop movie..........FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!

reply

Speaking of derivative...

reply

yes. and all those cop/buddy movies were rubbish. so a true homage would also means this is supposed to be a crap film

reply

you have no brain in your head

reply

I didn't say it was a great film, but I enjoyed it for what I ultimately realized it was and even said I can understand someone not liking it. I understand not being allowed a personal opinion and all because YOU didn't like it, but I'm just sayin...

And BTW, I love that someone attacks the film as bad and then goes on to use the wonderfully original and creative "I remember when this movie was called ..." critique. Be critical all you want, but please at least try to be critical in an original and well thought out (or at the very least funny/amusing) way. Isn't that what you're railing against the film for? Seems a bit hypocritical to offer up a critique/attack that is as unfunny and unoriginal as you accuse Cop Out of being.

Bluestreak, Showtime, Rush Hour, all rated PG-13, Copout is rated R. BIG difference, and incase you didn't know those movies weren't that bad, PEOPLE liked them. Maybe not critics, they aren't orignal but great fun yes.

reply

I think you are mistaken. Showtime and Blue Streak were not trying to pay an homage to bad 80's buddy cop movies. They were just bad buddy cop movies made for that time. They weren't intentionally bad, they just were bad. This film is intentionally bad. You must not be old enough to remember old 80's buddy cop films. It's alright. Seems like more and more people on this site are 16-years-old or younger, hence why they have no legit arguments.

For a guy who calls himself "The New Originals" you have nothing original or even clever to say.

I like it better the first time when it was called Battlestar Galactica

nah I liked it better the first time when they called it Battlestar Galactica :reimagined

How is the fact it's intentionally bad any excuse at all? It's worse, if anything. It's much more fun to watch a bad film that's sincere in its intentions.

You know, a lot of films pay homage to pulpy, trashy genres that aren't primarily known for a high level of craft and artistry. What these films do is they apply artistry and craft to those genres. Think Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Kill Bill. They all draw from a pretty ropey pool of influence, but all of them attempt to be quality films.

If you set out to make a film that is "intentionally bad" you will succeed.

Every. Single. Time.

"It's just a movie" is no excuse for treating us like idiots!

Not so, look at the Killer Tomatoes movies

All intentionally bad but only number 2 (return) is a hilarious classic.

By the way, if the zenith* of your film knowledge/references are Blue Streak and Showtime, I think that says more about your horrible taste in movies than it does anything about Cop Out.

go back and listen to the soundtracks from Beverly Hills Cop and/or 48 Hours and compare it to this one's. You'll find a striking resemblance.

reply

To the OP I completely understand and agree entirely with what you are saying. It's a throwback film, and it'll either work for most people or it won't. I understand a lot of people don't like this film I just hope they understand what the film was going for. I think if they recognize these certain qualities maybe they would hate it less.

And The Expendables is going to be amazing.

reply

I couldn't agree more and I got that it was an homage to 80s buddy cop movies! That is exactly why I enjoyed it so much was because I grew up and loved those Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop films. Weird thing is, that I went to see this with a 20 year old girl and she loved it too, and never saw those 80s buddy cop movies.

So I find it weird where all some of the hate is coming from. It is not the greatest movie in the world, but definetly some good fun for a saturday night.

New Originals...
You're kind of a huge baby when people don't agree with you, aren't you? Nobody said, "At least it wasn't terrible." What people said was that they enjoyed the film for what it was and really liked the retro 80s cop movie vibe. This may come as a shock to you and others, but not all films need to be GREAT. Some can be just be fun and enjoyable and what is fun and enjoyable to some falls flat to others. Guess what? Avatar is NOT A GREAT MOVIE. It contains a mediocre, derivative story with similarly mediocre, derivative dialog and characters. It's a good thing Avatar was shot in 3D, because everything else about it was one dimensional, but that didn't stop it from making 2.5 billion dollars.

Or to put it in language you understand... I liked Avatar better when it was called Dances with Wolves.

reply

I liked Avatar better when it was called Pocahontas.

an 80's buddy cop movie?
You know what? I think most people were able to figure that out.

Yeah, because if there's one thing we haven't seen enough of in the last 20 years, it's intentionally deriviative films. Boy, I was sure getting sick of all that creativity!

I know I'm shouting, I like to shout.

reply

I think the main point is that nostalgia makes people happy, and watching foul mouth buddy cop movies WAS basically my childhood, so it makes me very very happy to be taken back to a time when the world didn't seem so bad, because I was young.

reply

This movie was a mean spirited piece of crap. Everybody was either a fool or a butthole or both.

And just WHO is Tracy Morgan?

reply

McGonigle,
I'm not so sure most people were able to figure it out. People around here don't seem to be as hostile to the film itself as they are to those who would dare admit they enjoyed it. It's like hearing someone tell a joke that you don't find funny while hearing a bunch of other people in the room laugh at the same joke. You guys all seem irritated, not that you didn't like the joke, but with the people who did find it funny. That's the definition of not getting it. Rex Reed didn't get it either and he attacked critics who dared disagreed with his position.

Myself and several others have said we could understand that Cop Out may not appeal to everyone. I get it, I truly do. Is it so inconceivable that there are people out there that liked and appreciated Cop Out for the movie it is rather than hating it for being the movie it's not?

I'll just add this last bit. I went out last week and caught a 25th anniversary theatrical screening of Commando (the 85 Schwarzenegger flick). Commando is an absolutely AWFUL movie, but it's a lot of fun to watch. Sometimes fun trumps everything else.

reply

The reason people get mad about these awful movies (myself included) is people like YOU who go and actually pay for this garbage. If nobody goes to see these piece of trash movies, they wont keep making them.

reply

This may shock you and even upset you... you're the center of NO ONE'S universe. I don't know you, but I have to imagine even the people closest to you don't really give a *beep* what you think about things as it pertains to their everyday lives. just because YOU find this movie to be garbage doesn't make it so. You can say that all you like, but you remain an insignificant force in the cosmos. Even the worst movie ever made is SOMEBODY'S favorite film. What right do you have to tell them they're wrong. Tell me what your favorite movie is and I bet a can throw a rock and hit someone who hates it and thinks its trash.

And one more question, if you so HATED Cop Out, why are you spending time posting on the Cop Out forum? Aren't there better films on which to spend your time discussing. I'm not a big fan of rap music, therefore I don't spend any time on rap forums. Doesn't seem like a prudent use of my time. You may have less to do every day.

reply

Are you kidding me? I would never pay 10 dollars for that piece of trash. Anybody who couldn't tell by watching the trailer that this movie sucks obviously has bad taste. Oh and that "Even the worst movie ever made is SOMEBODY'S favorite film" comment is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. If that person's favorite film is the worst ever made, then that person has bad taste, such as yourself. Simple as that. You're talking about "getting" a movie like cop out. There is nothing to get. It's been made countless times and yet people like you will still pull out your wallet and think it's funny cuz the guy is drawing dicks on a double sided mirror. I remember when I was 12.

reply

Wait, so you're complaining about a film and frequenting a message board for a film that you couldn't even be bothered to see? I think that tells me just about everything I need to know about you.

How can I mass ignore?

reply

Actually, the blowhard move is say something like "Kevin Smith got kicked off the SouthWest plane because Cop Out was such a *beep* movie" a week BEFORE the movie actually came out. http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0003620/board/thread/157373272?d=157687468# 157687468

Just how far in advance did you see Cop Out? My guess is you didn't which means one of two things...
a) You still haven't seen the movie and have been bitching and whining about it sight unseen
or
b) You went opening weekend despite bitching about how *beep* it was the weekend prior... but I guess someone would have to be a real *beep* to do that.

I take that back, it's actually not a blowhard move... it's just a douchebag move. Something tells me if it was directed by anyone other than Kevin Smith (that director who "has zero talent and he's managed to brainwash a bunch of bored teenagers, turned unemployable adults, into thinking he's a genius") you wouldn't be bashing this at all.

In response to your theory that I think I'm a genius... nope. Not a genius at all. I am easily, however, far smarter than you (not exactly hard to do). But I'm certainly not a genius because I still can't figure out why some of you are so consumed with the fact that there are actually people who enjoyed Cop Out. This guy liked it- ok, great. That guy didn't- ok, great. Neither one is wrong- unless you're a 12 year old.

[deleted]

The movie is only as good as the sum of its parts.

Did you like the joke where he said, "No, no. I refu-- no, no!"

I liked the joke.

Did you like the part where Tracy Morgan's character was interrogating the guy using movie phrases?
I did.

I have never seen either of those jokes before.
A lot of it WAS stuff we have seen before, but a lot of it was original.

All dogs have four-wheel drive and full-leather upholstery, but that doesn't make all dogs the same.
Same with movies.
I found more unoriginal, trite, tired things in Avatar than I did in Cop Out.

Instead of just saying, "The movie sucked," how about pointing out the parts that did?
I believe that, once this is done, it will be much more difficult to brush the movie aside, since everyone can easily say, "I liked/disliked that part."

The movie had enough parts that I enjoyed to make it a "good" movie in my eyes.
If you didn't like those parts, then O.K., but that does not make it a bad movie. The actors were good, the story was sensible enough and the lighting was perfect.
What part of the movie is "bad"?
The jokes? You mean that entirely subjective part?

Excuuuuuse me, Princess.

reply

I don't have to go see this movie... it sucks. I already knew that after I saw the trailer for the first time. I've seen enough bad crazy black cop/ uptight white cop movies for a lifetime..this is a movie I might watch on HBO for free just to see how bad it is, then turn it off after 20 minutes and go watch the grass grow.

reply

HAHAHAHAHAHHAAH!

This isn't a bad crazy black cop/ uptight white cop movie. Both were crazy to varying degrees. The black guy was just a bit more slow on the uptake.

From ALL of the things you could glean from the trailer, you had to make THAT erroneous conclusion.

You're kidding right? You're spending all this time slagging off a film you haven't even seen? You knew it sucked from the trailer? I didn't know trailers had got so good you don't even need to see the movie!!!!
