Charlie too positive/optimistic

When his ex wife shows him the awful Facebook post by Ellie of him all he can say she can write, like his ex wife just acknowledge your daughter is a terrible person instead trying to see only the good in everyone, at times he wanted to see an idealised image of his own daughter than anything.

I suppose it's a phase he's going through. I mean, a man in his position can't exactly judge others. Most of us do this anyways as we're quick to criticize others rather than find the positives in their actions.

While his defining trait is meant to be his positivity and seeing the best in everyone it comes across as simplistic self delusion. The message I took out of this is he wanted to avoid the responsibility of having a child for a decade and then self delude himself into not seeing the negative impact of abandoning her. This film had a very hollow message.

reply

Maybe so but I fail to see how this gave the movie a hollow message, unless you just didn't like the main character. Charlie is flawed and perhaps failed his daughter but he was able to somehow fix this and find salvation in the process. I thought it was a good movie. A real underdog story...

Well wanting to see the best in everyone can pave the way for a major disappointment.

reply

He was chasing a feeling and idea of the perfect daughter. He believes so strongly in seeing only the best in people that he is blind sighted to anything bad about them.

reply

He never showed much desire to listen to or learn about his daughter, seeing others explain their perspectives about her to him as an attack or something boring.

reply

He slightly lethargic on top of that.
