Set in 2016
There is a scene where Charlie watches a clip of a debate featuring Donald Trump and Ted Cruz during the 2016 Republican primaries. What is the significance of this movie taking place in 2016?

shareThat was a good year. Otherwise I have no idea why.
shareNostalgia for the old days. It was a simpler time. We walked five miles to school and back, in the snow. A Hershey bar was a dime.
shareI was wondering why it was set in 2016. The events of that year didn’t have anything to do with the story. I noticed that he still had a CRT TV.
shareCRTs were even old in 2016 as well. I wonder if it is set in 2016 since it would be before the modern times of society’s view of gay and fat people since their treatment in society has changed dramatically in recent years.
shareI assumed the CRT TV was because he was homebound and never went out shopping. I don’t know if his computer equipment was somewhat dated.
shareI also noticed that when Ellie was recording Thomas talking,
you can see the date on the phone is 3/10/16
The main character was using one of those flip Blackberry phone.
shareI thought maybe it is an easy way to establish this is taking place pre-pandemic without explicitly telling us the year.
shareHigh probability of unsophisticated political criticism, something along the lines of Republicans and Trump hating gays and fat people. Both the political criticism and anti-religion theme were done too blatantly in my opinion. I would give up on the connection between Trump and LGBT completely it looked awkwardly forced.
shareProbably this. Another reason that come to mind would be them trying to avoid addressing the pandemic? But it wouldn't make sense, they could have set this movie in 2010 or so, it didn't have to take place precisly in 2016, and even if it had, they have no reason to mention the election "en passant", sorta like a veiled criticism and trying to draw an association between two subjects, as you said.
