what the beep is wrong with you people - SPOILERS*

i can't believe the rating of this film is so high, i can't believe the metascore is so high and i really can't understand what is it in this *beep* up movie that people like so much. this is one of the most perverted, sick, demented and weird movies i've seen. this movie is vastly moronic and strange. when i heard the ''meaning'' of some of the words like ''zombie'', ''keyboard'',''whore'' when i saw the ''boxing'', spitting ''blood'' scene, the whole barking stuff, the airplane *beep* etc. i actually laughed of how demented some people are to create something like that. Lanthimos is just another arty wanker amusing himself probably trying to preserve some deeply repressed nostalgia of his. the cat slicing scene really irritated me, i hope it wasn't for real, it'd be completely amoral to kill a cat for some *beep* like that. i understand the satire elements and ambiguousy but that doesen't overlap the fact of how *beep* up this movies is.
i felt like sharing my personal opinion since so many others did with whom i disagree, so i thought there should be atleast one negative opinion in the open regarding this film.

Well, from your review I would want to see it. Rating it 1/10 for being "weird" seems off though. That should really be reserved for unoriginal or technically bad movies. Your list of favorite movies is pretty conventional--films with massive appeal always compromise in some way--you should keep an open mind.

Like the poster above me said, giving a movie a 1/10 just because you think it's "weird" is vastly moronic in itself. A quick look at the trailer and you'd know the movie was not pandering to the the common movie-goer, but instead had a purpose to make you feel uncomfortable and think.

This is one of the strangest and most interesting films I've seen in a long time. I loved it. 9/10.

PS: I loved Kid A and OK Computer.

PS2: I liked American Psycho.

So I guess I'm pretentious and mainstream... or something?

Its a very pretentious movie. The people who love this movie are the same people who think Radiohead is a brilliant band.

Radiohead isnt pop music. They dont write catchy, commerical songs anymore.

Yes they do. all of their albums have at least one or two pop songs. Lotus Flower on King of Limbs, Kid A had Optimistic, 15 Step, etc.

but either way it's ridiculous to compare a hugely polarizing foreign arthouse film to an accessible rock (if you don't think it's pop) band who's sold millions of albums. you'd be better off comparing it to Merzbow or some other noise artist.

MERZBOW! *beep* I haven't heard that name in a long time. Hehe. Merzbow... I don't know whether I even ever listened to Merzbow, but in my late teens I held that name to be the highest end of most challenging music in existence. Hehe. Merzbow. Cheers for reminding me. I haven't heard that name in so long.

Don't know what this guys chatting, going on about Radiohead... Crazy bastard. Even more of a loon than the original poster.

I find posts like this kind of amusing, to be perfectly honest. I mean, the fact that it made you feel disgusted and weirded out shows it served its purpose and yet you give it such a low rating because you didn't like how it made you feel. I'm guessing you're one of those people who think every movie you watch has to made you feel good when that isn't the case. A movie giving you negative feelings doesn't make it a bad movie. It just means it made you feel something.

Someone like my mum wouldn't really get that. She seems to think every movie you watch has to make you feel good, as if that is their only purpose. Their purpose is not only to entertain but make you think and feel things- even unpleasant things. If I were to watch a film about a serial killer or some other *beep* up individual, I'm going to guess the sole purpose wouldn't be to make me root for them; it would probably be to make me feel scared or uncomfortable- or alternatively, to be put in shoes vastly different to my own and think about it.

I get that people mightn't want to feel such things but that makes me wonder why they watched it to begin with, unless they initially had no idea what it was about. And of course I get this movie definitely isn't for everyone but I think some people's criticisms about it being badly done have more to do with personal taste.

And back to the OP for a second, I don't really get you passing this off as moronic and leaving it at that. How, exactly? Don't you think if you'd been raised like that, you'd be a bit 'out there' too? That said, I don't think this movie is meant to be taken as seriously as people take it. Maybe it just translates that way to me but I feel as if it's, at times, meant to be a little silly, though that could just be because it's otherwise such a serious subject matter (parents locking their kids away and *beep* them up mentally and all).

I don't think every movie i watch has to make me feel good. There are plenty of movies that made me depressed and even disgusted and weirded out as you said that i've given high ratings and who i consider one of my favorites.I just don't like this particular one.

Of course if i was raised like that i'd be "a bit out there too", but thats not my point, i never questioned that, and that's not the question. The question is why are they doing this to their kids, it's never explained or even subtly hinted to the viewer, why?! I hope that covers the " you passing this off as moronic and leaving it at that" matter, i couldn't tell you completely "how exactly" because that's as far as my English goes.

And of course its more about personal taste, it's ALL about personal taste, this is a movie we are talking about.

The director is satirizing the way parents try to exert control over their child's development in a very darkly comedic way.

Your comment got me to thinking about some family friends. The father and mother kept the daughter and son on a tight leash -- nothing severe, but they put a lot of time and effort into monitoring, controlling, and disciplining their kids. Both kids became alcoholics. Then, both went through AA and came out fine. (Neither the father or mother are drinkers or drug users, btw.)

So, I think you're right-on with your analysis. Children should be, NEED to be, (carefully) exposed to the "evils" of the world, with explanation, understanding, and development of coping skills. What do the parents in this film think will happen to their kids when the parents die?

the cat stabbing scene was obviously fake. the writers didn't change the definition of words, the parents characters did to do some "experiment" on their kids. they're all living in our normal world. this movie isn't to entertain, it's to explore the human minds and psychology (which could be entertaining to some people). i thought it was interesting to see how characters behave under no contact with the outside world.
7/10.

It was just a funny movie with me with a few strange moments.

Some of us enjoy movies that make others uncomfortable?

I enjoy viewing it with people who haven't seen it and don't know what they are about to see....generally everyone agrees it's twisted but they also enjoy it or give credit to it being like nothing they've seen before......
