People have been endlessly arguing about whether the top would stop spinning and if that's the real world or just a dream. People argue about it as if there's an actual answer. But there is no answer. Nolan ended the movie that way just to get people to argue about it. The whole point was to get people to argue about it.

But yet you see many, many people who obsess over wanting to know what happened next.
Now, it's clear to the filmmakers leave it either unclear or open ended deliberately, so that the audience make up their own minds, and discuss.
And yet some still can't accept that...they assume there is an answer and if they keep asking, someone, somewhere will eventually tell them.
There are sometimes exceptions...the whole Blade Runner 'was Deckard a replicant' thing. I thought the inserted flashback of the unicorn running through the forest in the directors cut made that clear anyway, and Scott has confirmed this in subsequent interviews.
Another good example is the ending of original The Italian Job. A literal cliffhanger ending. And Caines last line was typical of the character...trust me lads,I will get us out of this...somehow. Perfect. That's all you need to know.
