Ellen Page miscasted?

I really love this movie and think she did a great job (her best performance so far imo). I can't help thinking her character came off as a bit shallow though, as compared to Marion Cotillard's character Mal. Maybe someone less "perky" and a bit darker would have been better? The movie Juno probably typecasted her for me I guess.

I didn't buy for a second that she was an architecture student actually and I met a lot of those weirdos. Also the puzzle she drew literally could not be solved - freeze frame and see. hah

Sorry to be a dick, but the past tense of cast, is cast (BTW). It's one of those words that doesn't change depending on present or past tense (like fit, you wouldn't say 'the five of them fitted into the car'. Fitted is a tailored shirt) - anyway...

Was she miscast? She pulled off the role but I don't think she was a huge asset to the movie. Michael Caine was miscast in my opinion. I was like "what's he doing here?" when he showed up.

Ken Watanabe struggled with his English in this movie, but besides that, I liked some of his scenes.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was a little too skinny/nerdy for some of the action. I think he pushes someone to their death and then springs back the other way. I just remember thinking 'that was uncoordinated looking'.

Marion Cotillard was incredible as Mel. She owned every scene she was in.

Tom Hardy was neither here nor there but Leo was the perfect star for this movie.

You took the words out of my mouth about the proper past tense of cast...

I used to see her as the weakest link in Inception. Admittedly, I had Juno in mind the first few times I saw the film and the fact that I wasn’t a big fan of her acting style in general (or really just the type of characters she was known for playing) was a bit off-putting, lol. But after subsequent viewings, I’ve come to appreciate Ellen in the film. I think she worked well with Leo and gave a convincing performance overall. And sure, arguing that another actress could have been more suitable and stronger in the role is completely fair. Nevertheless! Ellen did a very fine job, in my book. The bit of levity she also brings to the film (as does Tom Hardy) in contrast to Cotillard’s tragic character is definitely appreciated. And darker? Cotillard’s character brought enough of that.

I think Page did great as well, and I liked having her in the movie. The true weakness behind her role is the fact that her character is extraneous. Ostensibly, she's supposed to design the dreams the team goes into, which is something that didn't even need to be noted or shown onscreen... Plus, any other team member could have done that.

Having her join the group on the heist is pretty silly overall, she has no place there and her role of "helping with Mal" is needless, as she really doesn't do anything in that regard. Basically she just talks/yells at Dom a few times.

Her role would be better if she was actually part of the team, as she can still be a newbie that allows everything to be explained to the audience through her. That way she's not just tagging along with nothing to do.

That's the problem with the character, she's really just there so the other characters have someone to talk to. No, talk AT, she just stands there and listens to all the exposition.

I wonder if the character was meant to be more, someone who was a possible romantic interest and an alternative to the mad vision of Mol that was poisoning the waters of Leo's subconscious. I don't know if that was ever the intent, or if DiCaprio and Page has so little chemistry that it didn't make the final cut?

reply

DiCaprio's character is way out of Page's league... tough sell... Anyway, Page comes off as rather asexual in the film and in most films to be honest...

reply

She was there to be explained to and have exposition dumped on her head.

I agree, her acting was great but she looks like a 12 year old, not that she can help that. It didn’t help that all the men looked like they stepped out of GQ and Ariadne looked dumpy. I get she’s a student but even her first class airplane outfit was ridiculous.

I'm not sure there's a good casting for Ellen Page. Her performances always come off as kind of flat and lacking in any emotion or depth. Seeing her and Marianne Cotillard in the same scene is like seeing a girl next to a fully grown woman.

I'm not sure coming out helped her much, because her physical presence and her flat acting seem to only amplify her "I'm a lesbian" identity, making her difficult to cast in roles where she's not just herself.

Somebody like Kate McKinnon or even Ellen DeGeneres is different in this way -- they're totally credible beyond her expressed sexual identity, where it seems to limit Ellen Page in some way.

It's also kind of a cruel joke seeing as how Ellen lost to Marianne at the 2008 A.A. ceremony.

"Seeing her and Marianne Cotillard in the same scene is like seeing a girl next to a fully grown woman."
Pretty well sums it up. The difference between Ellen and Cottilard is astonishing on every level. She just didnt "fit" into the movie or offer much. I remember watching it for the first time and being confused at the kiss scene between her and Joseph Gordon-Levitt wondering if I missed something, was she supposed to be a romantic interest? Overall, she was fine, her role was minor enough to overlook the flavorlessness of her acting but I definitely think they could've cast a better choice.

reply

Yes, she is bad. She is full of hate too but that's not relevant.

reply

I think the problem was her character more than the actress. I don't get why she was so reckless and annoyingly over confident. She didn't need to be such a contrarian - perhaps writing her as a rebel was meant to explain why she would have gone along with all the craziness so quickly.

reply

Maybe she should have been a lot prettier.

shes a dude now.

How? Operation?

no, you just say you are a man, and then you are instantly a man...

This makes no sense.
