You Can't Produce a Good PG-13 Zombie Horror Movie
Aside from how I felt about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (I didn't like it), this movie only serves proof as in why a descent zombie movie can't be done well with a PG-13 rating.
Going back to George Romero's Night of the Living Dead franchise and The Walking Dead TV show, what makes watching the zombies entertaining is just how bloody they can get with both retaining R and TV-MA ratings. They're monster stories first before anything else, and a creature is the star of their story. Vampires lure and bite, werwolves main and eat, and with zombies, they don't just attack and eat, they go at it as bloody and disgusting as they can.
Zombies are a messy group and weather it's them eating or the hunters killing them, it's going to be dirty. While there are a few exceptions to the rules like ParaNorman (without spoiling it, it's more of a tragic redemption) and Warm Bodies (which was a comedy-romance in a zombie setting), the audiences that watch zombie stories are the ones that want to see as much action. That's going to mean lot's of splattering blood and limbs coming off.
Lions gate tried to pass off Pride and Prejudice and Zombies with a PG-13 in order to gain a wider window and take advantage of the teen audience, they've underestimated how much teenagers can handle (at least the ones that like Zombie action). With a PG-13, much of the blood splattering and heads flying cannot be as prominent as per the MPPA rules with violence. Had this been R rated, I think that more typical zombie fans would have gone out to see this.
What do you think? Are there any good PG-13 zombie movie's out there?
