This is not a comedy?

When I first watched the trailer, I was quite surprised to see that there seemed to be no hints of humor whatsoever. I haven't read the original book but with such a silly premise, one would expect it to be a comedy film. Is this really a film about people in the eighteenth century fighting zombies that's supposed to be taken seriously?

It's very much a comedy, albeit of the straight-faced type. Obviously, it's particularly funny to those who have read the original book - for instance, seeing characters who were originally having a witty verbal fight actually kung-fu each other in earnest is quite satisfying.

But you could enjoy it regardless. The contrast between the uber-polite, elegant, restrained Regency society and the bloody, pulpy mess of the zombie genre is quite hilarious.

My mouth was open during 100% of the movie. I was either: eating popcorn, with my jaw dropped or laughing histerically. It was an odd experience.

Although I haven't read the original text (I have read the book this is based upon, though) I totally pegged this, among other things. Those were exactly the moments that made this film so funny and amusing.

They really screwed up with that US trailer that made it seem like a serious zombie action movie. Terrible marketing.

How can someone call a movie that is not funny whatsoever and where the actors play it completely absolutely straight and a movie that has A LOT of drama a "comedy"?

You might as well call lord of the rings a comedy... just because of the silly hobbits.

Call friday the 13th a comedy why dont you...

reply

Senses of humor differ I found it very funny. More so because it was played straight. I enjoy humor more when it is played straight.

reply

It absolutely is a comedy. I laughed harder than I have in ages. All 3 times!

Lily James said as much in an interview. The director told the actresses to play their scenes seriously rather than in a mocking 'wink to the audience' way. The humour comes from the fact that they're being so deadly serious - so yes it is a comedy.

I can believe this. This movie came across as a straight adaptation of P&P, but with some zombies thrown in for good measure. And that is exactly what I wanted from it. The first proposal scene is pee-in-your-pants funny, even though the actors are taking it very, very seriously.

I am looking forward to watching this in blu-ray when it comes out.

It's an absolutely pathetic movie. Again it's zombies zombies zombies. They ruin a wonderful historic looking drama in to a zombie movie. Disgusting.

Its a shame it failed. Being a not Jane Austen fan and not getting all the insides jokes I still thought it was a really good film. But I do think the reason it failed was that it was´nt enough comedy or taking seriosly. It was either and if you not getting these inside things being a fan of the book and a fan that can accept a adoptaion like this it was´nt that lot to laugh about. My rating is more because I really like the genre.

It probably failed at the Box Office also due to lack of advertising. I only knew the film was out because I was keeping up with the news. And Deadpool was the main competition. Movies released in February tend not to do very well in general - it's after the cut-off date for Oscar nominated pieces and before the summer blockbusters get released.

This was supposed to be a comedy??

reply

not to those whose only understanding of comedy is toilet humor like that of the Farrelly brothers or Pauly Shore.

Sly, wry, and witty.

It's definitely NOT a comedy. It is played totally straight. It just has a wonderfully bizarre twist in the setting of the movie. There are no verbal jokes in the movie, nor is anyone hamming it up trying to be funny.

The humor that some find in it is the bizarre nature of the twist that was put on a classic story that takes place in 1700's era England. The preposterousness of upper society people in England trying to maintain a semblance of their lifestyle just seems funny on it's face, but when you think about it, given the lifestyle and society that those people lived in it really kind of makes sense.

I don't think this was a great movie, but it certainly was entertaining - and very interesting.

Comedy that is played totally straight is still comedy. It just appeals to a different sense of humor than other sorts. Personally I prefer it to movies where people are hamming it up but that's me.

One of the more amusing scenes is when she is catching that guy's spy flies with her hands, and then squishes them before handing them back to him.

I laughed a few times but not as much.
