How do movies like this get a Greenlight?

I'm asking in all seriousness. I have not seen the film nor do I plan to, as I find the premise absurd, but that's just me. I don't care that someone produces a movie that I find to be ludicrous, I just want to know how this is done? How does this happen? How are decent scripts passed over for movies like this or Jupiter Ascending, and on and on and on (the list is never ending). I can't wrap my head around this. You catch whiffs or hints of potentially great movies and/or plots, then they fade into obscurity and Hollywood fills the dead space with dung like this. Is the magic formula to take a classic book, and rip it apart, add several layers of ridiculousness, and then that makes it a hit? Can I just come up with oh I don't know, " The Count of Monte Cristo meets the Hunchback of Notre Dame all while attending Hogwarts fighting off nargles". (BTW - that's my idea - my idea, no stealing it!) I mean WTF - who picked this up and said - "WOW, a classic stuffy romance set to the back drop of Victorian England with, say what now, Zombies! Shut the front door *nameless genius scratches chin* Hmm The walking dead is doing pretty good right now, so I say let's run with it"! Is that how it goes down?

If you can't see how well this will do at the box office, and then later on streaming and sell-through, then you don't understand movies or people at all.

Not one bit.

Bahahahahahaha.

I'm pretty sure most people (no matter how stupid or if I "don't understand them") won't want to see a PG-13 zombie slice fest.

The only reason it may do well at the box office is if enough fans of the book come see it.

Actually, I know many people (myself included) who enjoy PG-13 zombie movies! Many people like zombie stuff and not everyone is a fan of gore or needless sex/nudity. I'm very excited about the movie and THRILLED with the rating. Not everyone shares your tastes.

I agree with this. Most people would not want to see a PG-13 zombie slice fest.

The producers, however, do not need most people to want to see it just enough people to see it.

Most people do not want to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens but enough certainly have. :)

You are the one who green lit this movie. We the consumers are the ones who feed the movies. Don't be so critical and have a sense of humor and adventure. Enjoy his movie. If you want the original P&P then read the book again or the movie version somewhere by the Brits or Americans as well. USA turned out billions of movies so they want something a little different. Chill

Crazy concept. Someone thought it might work!

Honestly I think the movie has appeal. It's like the perfect date movie, Jane Austen for the girls and zombies for the guys. It makes picking a movie easy. Who knows about the quality of the movie, the trailer looks like tv movie quality. If it gets good reviews probably it will do well, but if the reviews are bad, it will probably bomb.

I think people are trying their hardest to be cute and original with these mish mash of ideas. To me, they just look completely stale and unappealing. If you offered me $100 to sit through this, I'd still say no....and i love bad movies, but Hollywood's idea of a bad or unique movie is so pretentious. It's also a crime to have a zombie movie (satire or not) rated pg-13.

reply

No one would pay you to watch the movie, so that comment is senseless. But I imagine if someone gave you a ticket you would watch it. The fact that you have not seen it and will not see it means you also should not be commenting on it.

I don't think you should be using the word pretentious in your post unless you are referring to your own comments. Since you seem to have no grasp of anything you were trying to trash.

Movies are PG-13 to let the largest portion of movie goers purchase tickets. But you already knew that so again why would you post such a meaningless comment.

It is not meant to be a gore-fest. There are plenty of movies out there to quench your blood lust.

If you have read the original Pride and Prejudice, and about the author, it seems it would be something that would be looked upon with favor.

The juxtaposition is wonderful and not a Hollywood idea, read the book the movie is based on written several years ago.

Being ignorant and close-minded, maybe you should think before posting again.

Yes, i'm familiar with the novel but I don't care what story it's mashed up with, the idea of putting it together with zombies is just silly and stupid. The trailer was horrible, so I have no intention of seeing this. Honestly, I hope you enjoy it, but I imagine it's going to be a major flop.

reply

You don't seem to be grasping that the film is based on a novel titled "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" that is in itself a mashup of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and the zombie genre. That 2009 novel spent some time on the best-seller lists, which probably had something to do with Hollywood optioning it for a film treatment.

I thought the trailer looked like the film would be an amusing horror-comedy-period piece, and it did not disappoint when we saw it last night.

The novel's hilarious. Don't know if this is a good adaptation or not, though.
