Henry Cavill's US accent!

It's QUALITY! looking forward to superman now xD he totally persuaded me to accept a British Superman after watching that trailer.

reply

I feel torn, I cant wait to see Superman ...but I really dont want to watch any movies where he doesnt have his original accent!

"Oh! Thank God, the angels are here!"- Dean Winchester AKA Sarcasm Extraordinaire!

reply

I came here to say the same thing! lol. Just watched the tailer and his American accent sounds great.

reply

I thought the same thing. I have been curious about the accent ever since he got cast as Superman (but haven't really done any research to see if he's done an American accent in anything else, haha) but wow! It sounds perfect. It also looks like a fun movie, just in general :)

reply

why does he have to play "a young American" can't he just keep his plummy Brit accent!

reply

I'm English (from London) and I love Henry's accent, but his American accent is great, it's really convincing.

reply

His British Channel Islands accent is cool.

reply

Superman isn't American ;-)

reply

Naturalised.

He does a good American Accent in Blood Creek (aka Town Creek). Honestly you forget he's British while watching it and I think that's the ultimate goal is that the actor makes you forget he's/she's not from the country they are portraying.

Are you guys nuts? His American accent is terrible. He over prononces his "R's" and opens his mouth too wide. I think he's a great actor and a perfect choice for Superman, but he should definitely keep his British accent cause his American one doesn't cut it.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

reply

I watched this movie last night and his accent is SO BAD its embarrassing!!!

His American accent does no Justice at all..

reply

I mean, his voice is so great that he could talk with any accent and that would be great. Of course, I guess it would probably ruin the film...

He also does an American accent in Hellraiser: Hellworld. Boy does a good job with accents :)

reply

The guy can't act. No range. His father gets killed and he shows no emotion. Crap film and crap actor.

reply

I really appreciate this view, he is an horrible actor. I just couldn't understand how could the director have accepted such horrible acted scenes. The way he runs, his emotions, ah! He gives me scares for sure.

reply

I hear people talk about his weird running. How exactly does he run?

reply

It looked for me as if like he was running to catch a escaping Hen/Chicken on a farm. Eeks!!

I haven't seen any one running much worse than this especially in tense scenes. If this kind of running was used in a comedy scene it might fare well else argh.. its better not to even comment about it.

reply

Surely we should be discussing if he could do a Kryptonian accent not an American one.

reply

LOL@ your description! I am usually one to overlook these types of things, but yes, unfortunately Henry Cavill has a strange way of running and it is quite noticeable. I noticed it sometime around when he realizes the cops are not going to help him find his family and he's trying to get away from them. I just got the impression that Cavill wasn't very athletic, which is fine since he is an actor and not a professional athlete. I was just surprised that the director didn't opt for a stunt double, but since Cavill's face visible, I guess he was needed to do it instead.

On the topic of his American accent, it didn't bother me. He pronounced a few words strangely, but it wasn't distracting or so terrible that it took me out of the film.

reply

Haha!!

I don't care much about these either but this one really took me by surprise.

People don't need to be athletic to look good while running, I have seen many people/celebs who weren't athletic but still looked good while running. You could just run slow, no need to run fast - camera man would take care of the rest.

About language, I wasn't really concerned about it, as long I could understand his dialogues, it was fine with me.

reply

The Director specifically told Cavill to act like he was hyperventilating and over-the-top scared. That's most likely the reason his acting (and his running) is bad in the movie. Cavill is actually a good actor when given good material to work with.

It has nothing to do with not being athletic. If you've seen "Immortals" and looked at set photos of the upcoming "Man of Steel" film, it's quite clear that Cavill is in fact VERY athletic. Although for this, he had to gain weight at the director's insistence because, get this; he was too "ripped" to play this role. Since it was right after he worked his a$$ off in "Immortals" running around shirtless, he had to look "normal" in this.

So Cavill stopped working out and sat around overeating to gain weight and look more like a normal guy and less like a Greek warrior turned god.

Acting-wise, while Cavill seemed off from his usual fare--I thought he was good in The Tudors--but I blamed the director and the terrible screenplay. I love Sigourney Weaver and was pleased to read Cavill praising her recently in the media, but even she was off here. From the editing, to the direction and the screenplay, the filmmakers here were just pure amateurs and how they got this great cast together is beyond me.

Even with the director's (poor) instructions, Cavill looked silly in his scenes. I personally would have gone with a stand-in, but I guess his face was needed in the scenes, hence why he did the running himself. His physique looks great when in peak condition, but that is not an indication of athletic ability. You would be surprised how many bodybuilders and fitness models would fail at athletics because they purely concentrate on building muscle and nothing else. Now Cavill probably increased his athleticism, endurance and stamina by training for both Immortals and Man of Steel, but he just does not come off as naturally athletic...but it's fine and not a dig at him. As long as he pulls off the characters he plays, athletic ability is moot in the long run.

reply

Cavill was quite clearly athletic for "Immortals". It's one thing to be a gym "meat head" who's all strength, no endurance but a body as lean as that with no free weight training (Cavill says that many times - it was all body weight and cardio training) cannot be achieved if you're not athletic. It just can't be done.

I doubt that means Cavill is a natural born track runner or something. He's said many times he was made fun of in high school for being a bit chubby. But it doesn't mean he isn't athletic. But as I said before, some of it could have had a lot to do with Cavill losing a lot of his stamina while he was sitting around doing nothing but overeating to gain weight and lose his cut lean physique.

OR maybe it was an injury and he was just pushing through it. You never know. Either way, the movie is going to do terrible no thanks to the lack of marketing and how bad the movie is in quality. But I doubt it will do much harm to Cavill's career. He's young and is pretty good at what he does when given good material to work with.

Sometimes it's just over eating on healthy food like nutrigran bars and other stuff. And the movie is decent IMO

reply

I think that Henry Cavill did a pretty good job with doing an american accent.

reply

Sooo funny you guys brought this up. It was the one and only time in an action film I have ever noticed someone running so strangely!!

Cavill scampers, he doesn't run. Short strides, doesn't raise the knees high enough. It's like Rocky chasing after the chicken. He's not running, he's scampering is the best way to put it.

But that's the least of his problems. Horrible actor! He is just reading lines. He over acts. He doesn't look "in the moment".

According to Doc, he was told to act like he was hyperventilating and over-the-top scared. If that's true (not sure how he would know that unless he was on the set), a good actor can pull that off and be "believable". Henry Cavill is not "believable". That's the bottom line.

NOT looking forward to Man of Steel!

"Scampering" may be a good way to put it. Although that could have to do with the fact that he was acting panicked throughout the whole movie and that he was injured in the film, too.

Nobody did. But Cavill was the only one in the movie who actually tried. And he actually is a good actor when given suitable material to work with.

His role in "The Tudors" proves this.

I know it because Cavill himself said so in interviews he did for the movie. As for being "believable", I certainly felt he was more believable than anyone else in the film. Weaver and Willis couldn't have looked more bored to be in this "bad" film.

But since Cavill is still a newcomer and can't be picky about the roles he's offered (not until after "Man of Steel" either does well or doesn't), he clearly works hardest to be believable with varying results.

NOT looking forward to Man of Steel!

Your loss.

Henry Cavill makes me yearn for Brandon Routh!!

reply

Cavill is a better actor than Routh. And I don't even dislike Routh. I found him to be one of the few good things about the lackluster "Superman Returns". But he was given so little dialogue, which could be because Routh is very wooden when speaking his lines. Everything he says sounds like it was stuck on ONE note.
But he was able to convey the emotional side of Superman through his facial expressions and body language well.

But like I said, Cavill is a better actor. "The Tudors" proves this.

Yeah when Henry runs he also doesn't lift his arms much, which makes it all the more noticeable.

As for his acting, he isn't given much to do here. His role is pretty one-note.

Nope, his American accent is awful actually.

I had no idea he is or that he is British..his american accent is spot on.

whoa..and not a single slip.

who Jordie?

reply

I'd have to agree... I thought it was pretty atrocious. Well I guess the accent itself isn't that bad but it doesn't come across as natural and made his acting seem really stiff.

reply

I wholly agree. Just refer to the trailer of the movie, which isn't afraid to showcase his accent's "qualities".

Mr. Cavill did it justice in 'Man of Steel' though.

I think his accent got a lot better in MoS. He said he practice a lot of the role of Superman and it shows.
