I doubt this girl weighs 100 lb soaking wet, but they show her landing hard punches in a boxing ring and overpowering male mercenaries in hand-to-hand combat. The scene where she kills a man by pinning him to the ground was truly laughable. And I doubt anyone with such a lack of musculature could be a good athlete, much less the superhuman specimen depicted here. Ridiculous movie.
Haven't you ever watched South Park? PC principal is a frat boy SJW who calls everyone "Bro". Ah, you might be too offended to watch that. Oh well, have a good day.
And the fact that you actually use the word "triggered" tells me all I need to know about you.
Keep it up man. I'm not one of those people who blame people like you for shutting down the imdb message boards. I'm someone who blames the people who don't have the skin to deal with you or the ability to laugh at you for the downfall of the imdb message boards.
What are you, around 14 or 15 years old? Because this becomes even more funny if you're a fully grown adult. I guess maybe a little sad too, but not unexpected. Come on "bro", keep it coming and win the argument. Maybe get a little political too, talk to me about protests and blocking traffic so hardworking individuals can't get to work on time, talk about "cry ins", and "safe spaces". Maybe I'll give you a participation trophy for your effort. This shit is too good!
In the old games she could jump across 10 meter gaps and launch herself more than 3m straight in the air. Her athletic ability is least of the problems with this movie because I don't think it should be very realistic, though I'd still prefer Lara sticking to her two handguns and shooting the baddies up instead of fighting them hand to hand.
Like most movies, it's an extreme exaggeration of reality. I don't get worked up over it because power in martial combat is often the result of speed combined with accuracy, so I can suspend disbelief in these cases.
For me it depends on what is going on. If she is quick and gets enough shots in and uses weapons often I am ok with it. If however she is being hit a lot or doing things that clearly require a certain level of strength advantage...same as with a small male it begins to break the suspension of disbelief.
I have no problem with it in general but wonder why a woman the size and weight of Alicia Vikander (whom I loved in Ex Machinima and other films) is acceptable doing these things because of the reasons stated by TexasJack yet when a male is the lead he is never played by Michael Cerra or Jessie Eisenberg.
Yeah cuz Jackie Chan wasn’t a 40 year old midget during his prime years. Pfffffff please, Vikander was in the best shape of her life and did all of her own stunts, I honestly can’t imagine any other female Hollywood actress pulling off what she did.
@Goliard
My point is that when casting a role where the audience is to believe that character "can do those things" the male characters are played by guys that you can believe can do those things.
In the movie you have shown here, Jessie is a sleeper assassin. You would not cast an actionstar for this role as the idea is that you should not look at the character and think "Oh, he can kick my ass"
In a way you proved my point by showing that in order to have a Jessie Eisenberg play that action hero role there must be an outside reason why he can do those things. In Tomb Raider we are to believe that Alicia Vikander can beat up trained soldiers because....?
Also, did you see that Kristen Stewart also took out a couple of people like a pro.
Please do not get me wrong, I actually have no problem with the idea in film of whom ever (man or woman) being an action star but this movie is clearly playing on the idea I am talking about. In the 80's did we have a Rick Moranis playing a Terminator, no of course not.
Um. . .
You said "when a male is the lead he is never played by. . .Jessie Eisenberg." Now you want to explain why you're wrong?
Ok, I'll play:
Your reasons for why Jesse is realistic in this role, and Alicia Vikander is not in hers, are disingenuous at best, and flawed in any case. Point to any backstory/explanation you like; bottom line is in a (clearly) exaggerated action-fantasy movie, one is no more absurd than the other. Yet you want to excuse the male version, and not the female.
What I find most interesting in these interminable complaints, on EVERY such movie thread in history, is that the loudest complainants are those who know the least about fighting. Or human biology. Or fictional consistency/world-building.
Ah well.
Rest assured: the laws of physics/realism are in NO WAY more abused by Vikander's feats, than by those of the males in this (or any other) similar movie. Or by the anthro representations. Or the weapons use. Or the engineering/function of the various gadgets. Etc, etc, etc. Rinse, lather, repeat. . .
I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ALICIA IN THE ROLE. I am able to realize it is a movie and therefore accept it as is and enjoy it.
I used Jessie Eisenberg as an example and you found an exception (that movie looks fun by the way so THANK YOU) but it does not change the fact that in a high majority of male action films the hero at least looks the part.
I merely brought up the idea that it is more acceptable for a smaller framed female to be an action star than it is for a smaller framed male.
Yet you want to excuse the male version, and not the female.
I do not want excuse either but the fact remains that the story gave an outside reason for Jessie's character to be an assassin but only gave a quick scene of Lara getting beat in her film. Essentially we are to accept Lara without any establishment of ability to win a fight but they had to give a reason for Jessie.
In any case I do not care, I enjoyed Tomb Raider and hope to enjoy American Ultra when I see it.
I don't get worked up over it because power in martial combat is often the result of speed combined with accuracy, so I can suspend disbelief in these cases.
That's one of the consequences of the "women can be action heros" trend. People are losing track of real world.
This is Bruce Lee punching his heavy bag, which was customized and three times heavier than a standard one. If you ever tried to punch the standard one, you can see how damn strong was Lee. He was very fast, and very accurate, AND very strong.
Did she over power them so much? I mostly recall defensive movies to quickly move and disorient that are pretty common (at least in films?)(like moving a gun out the way)
Well you have to expect a certain level of exaggeration, it is an action movie. However they should probably be more conscious about that, as it can take you out of the moment when its stretched too far.
