They needed an easy solution for the end, the whole film falls apart as soon he wants to go back on his side. This kind of movie is better as a 60minute Outer Limits or Twilight Zone, but here they had to add too much meat to an already starving chicken.
But you got it, that the cloaker were hiding the whole gorge from satellite view, so guaranteeing the world does not find this super huge strange gorge, right? With the cloakers failed, it is just a matter of time until the public finds the place. So better destroying it with all the secrets as getting exposed.
