Was the Admiral Thrawn Actor too Portly for the role?

I must admit that this is a poor failing of mine - i.e. a struggle to respect, to a certain degree, the portly.

e.g. One of my favourite comedians is Stewart Lee. However in his most recent BBC series I couldn't help but notice that he had "let himself go a bit" and I found it quite distracting, to the point of losing focus on his comedy.

Now I appreciate that is MY failing, that's on me, but with regards to the iconic expanded universe figure, is it a fair point to raise?

The guy is renowned as a master tactician, a man full in control, a man who assesses every angle, a brilliant strategist. And yet, he's let himself go a bit hasn't he?

It's kind of noticeable and slightly distracting. Should they have insisted the actor got in shape for the role?

Assuming they whip him into shape for the big movie (har) it doesn't bother me that Thrawn has gone to pot in his exile. Everything we're shown is in a state of broken down disarray. But he would waste no time whipping himself back into disciplined shape once back in the real galaxy.

The whole affair was a bit silly though. All this worry about the big bad Thrawn and it turns out that he's just the meme of the dog sitting in a burning house saying everything is fine.
