I thought this was a good movie!!
I'm really picky at times too. So I was surprised I liked it as much as I did. Yes, it paid homage to a lot of different horror movies, but it's still managed to be it's own thing and enjoyable. I liked the grittiness, the sex, the gore, and the thing I like the best is that it captured 1979 very well. It had a slight woke element in making the porn interracial because interracial porn was not a big thing back then. Plus it added in a Hispanic chick to add even more diversity to the cast. But I think that's pretty much as far as the wokeness went. It didn't make it unwatchable for me though. I still enjoyed it. Although I'm not gonna lie, I came very close to turning it off during the Landslide scene. The combination of the song along with the visuals was extremely depressing to me. If it had going on two seconds more I would have shut it. But I'm glad that I pushed through that part and kept watching because I did enjoy it. The one major thing that I was disappointed in is that they did not find some kind of way to connect Maxine and Pearl. If they had made Maxine Pearl's great great granddaughter or something of that nature, then it would have made more sense for Mia Goth to play Pearl in this and in the prequel. Hopefully they'll give some kind of indication in MaXXXine that the two characters were related somehow. My other favorite thing about this movie is the absolutely fantastic soundtrack. The soundtrack and the whole 1979 aesthetic where the best things about this movie for me. Also, I liked what they were doing so much with this movie that I think the movie would have still been good had they made it into a straight up drama without any horror at all.
