Could have made a great horror movie ...

The premise of this movie is great, but they could have gone in so many other, better directions. The romance theme was too convenient to be believable, and the final subplot involving their fixing the ship was predictable.

Instead, they should've done a psychological horror, depicting the effects of solitude in outer space. Alternatively, they could have done a more standard horror centering on Jim's being a dangerous, creepy stalker. Think Dead Calm in outer space (or something similar).

I was about to name this movie too, lol. Pandorum was absolutely terrible, by the way. Passengers wasn't so bad overall.

Cracked.com just posted an article arguing this very same point ... the movie would've been a psychological horror film had the story simply been told from Aurora's point of view.

Why does this movie have to be horror? Just because the setting is Outer Space? If you want space horror, watch the Dead Space animated movie.

Part of the plot was the effect of solitide on an individual. The guy was going nuts and in the process, decided to screw somebody else.

They could have had several kids and fed the sleeping colonists to them. That would have been horror!

Maybe.

I'm ok with the way it was. We have the movie Cast Away that kind of covers your plot. In this one we are presented with a "what would you do" type of scenario. You have the power to wake up many companions to have fellowship with or you can spend the next 50-60 years alone on this ship....looking at the sleeping bodies of other people.

Would you wake some or not?

I'm ok with this vs. the horror theme you mention. Both would be fine but I don't look at it as one plot would have not "right" and the other "wrong".
