Originally inted to be 7 part series like Harry Potter

During the Dark Knight days the producer told his idea was to have at the least 7 Batman films like Harry Potter. As Dark knight is only the year two of Batman's career. After this movie he comes back after 8 years and gets done with the being Batman soon. May be they should have made a third year film where batman returns and if Nolan/Bale are not interested after 3 films they should have let other directors to continue it like James Bond series. That is the one reason i always find this movie disappointing when it ended the series sooner than expected

thing with that is there were 7 Potter novels but yeh they could've carried on with TDK like Bond..eventually replacing Bale when he got bored after say 6 movies like Connery did - either recasting so its still Bruce Wayne or another character like John Blake (Oldman, Caine, Freeman would continue as long as they could probably like M, Q, Moneypenny did in the Connery/Moore films)

however Nolan mustve started to think long term and how the series would eventually become 'diluted' with ever more elaborate villains and ultimately a shared universe with aliens and 'metahumans' like Superman, WW etc (as at the time in 2008, 09, 10 etc Marvel was starting to be heading that way) so he mustve thought it was preferable to conclude TDK as a self contained trilogy - a gritty realistic take on a real world batman and his villains (scarecrow/Ras Al Glud, two face/joker, catwoman/bane - no riddler or penguin but whos to say batman didn't encounter/fight realistic versions of them inbetween BB and TDK)

and then around 2010 or 11 when they were in the middle of doing TDKR he and Goyer came up with and idea of how to do Superman in a similar 'Begins' way to batman and by that time MCU had arrived with Avengers so after that WBros were no doubt keen on their own shared universe so after MOS in 2013 Nolan/Goyer probably considered 'shall we integrate TDK into the superman world or not?' (Iron Man had started out very 'realworld' yet now was battling aliens and interacting with norse gods and the Hulk) leading to some rumours Bale might appear in BvS (think bale even said he was open to doing it) but they obviously figured 'no leave TDK as a separate universe and a new rebooted batman can be in the DCU' (but with a lot of similarities to TDK trilogy in terms of his tech/look/zimmer etc)
