i dont think some got that it was a comedy

yes it's a bit too clean cut...yes the trailer sucked and they sold it horribly...

just watching it now... scene with cruise singing "i wanna know what love is" into the ass and crotch of the rolling stone reporter is hysterical.. (this should have been in the trailer) alec baldwin and russell brand falling in love to "i cant fight this feeling anymore".. the new kids thing

this is a funny fun movie.. great singing... silly... kitchy.. cruise in particular is a riot

I agree. I just saw it on Netflix and thought it was great! I loved hearing those old songs again, and it was hilarious having them really sung by the actors themselves. I didn't even know it was a musical when I rented it, but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

And who doesn't get off on "We built this city..."? Was that Jefferson Starship in the crowd?

reply

"We built this City" was listed as the worst video ever made by VH1, so I think there are a great many who don't get off on it.

I get that this is meant as a joke, but most of the music was/is just really bad. It was overwhelmingly trashed by critics back in the day.

cue the "I don't care what critics think", anyhow, from my POV, this was the music for the lowest common denominator, so I think its pretty sad tahtb its celebrated, even if mocked.

@chas437:

VH1 made the "We Built This City" video? I had no idea that they produced any videos for bands, but I guess if they could push their own stuff, like American Idol does, that would make sense.

I know this is late, but Vh1 didn't make the video. That person was saying that "we built this city" was named the worst video ever made, by Vh1. Meaning Vh1 did a countdown of worst videos and named that song/video as the worst.

I'll take the happy fun catchy 80s 'lowest common denominator' over all of the ever so 'deep' music that the grungers and hipsters and hardcore rap fans go for while praising themselves for being ever so deep and sneering at the common peon or being so proud of how bad ass and gangsta they are.

Now there are too many around who are too obsessed with maintain their cred and being bad ass or too 'deep' to dare to be silly and fun like in the 80s.

reply

Easy to miss the attempt at comedy because it simply wasn't funny.

reply

I get that it was a comedy...but the kind of comedy wasn't maintained through all of it...scenes that were intended to be taken as romantic were really done horribly...I mean, if those scenes were supposed to be funny then they failed at being funny and if they were supposed to be anything else they were horrible. I really liked the silly stuff like singing "I wanna know what love is" into her crotch...if that tone was maintained throughout it would have worked as a comedy. But the tone seems to be kind of fluid in this movie...it changes from scene to scene, which doesn't work in this case. There are kinds of comedies that change tone...but this doesn't fit that category...it doesn't work to be outrageously silly and then not maintain that kind of comedy. The movie Airplane, for example, has a total silly over the top sense of humor all through it. The "I wanna know what live is" scene reminded me of that kind of movie, it was seriously funny and silly in a great way. If the whole film maintained that, this had the potential to be hilarious all the way through.

Awesome movie.

Great fun.

Good comedy!

I think the people who didn't get that it was a comedy were the writers.

That's seriously a good way of putting it. The writers seem to be taking the material seriously at times.

Few movies are 100.0000% comedies or 100.00000% dramas.

Why does something have to be 100.000000% comedy??

reply

Subble, you are absolutely correct. I found this movie painful to watch and not funny. Yes I love the music, it's my era, but watching actors badly lip sync to those great songs was enough for me.

reply

My reactions to the movie (in order): 1.what the hell Am I watching?
2. Oh, I get it, its a parody!
3.Wait, are they serious or...?
4. Yeah, no. Its a parody.
5. Or is it not?
6. Or is it? Etc.

How could you not? I mean are there ANY serious musicals out there? I'm asking seriously - I don't like musicals, generally. Disappointed when this started out as one. Had no idea what I was getting into. But when she said, "When my hamster died, your music helped me get through it" to this demonic over the top dude, I knew for sure all the hamminess was intentional.

reply

For your question "Are there any serious musicals out there?" Yep. West Side Story - though it had its light moments such as "Officer Krupke," it was a pretty darn serious musical, heavy on both romance and drama - people even get killed. It's based on Romeo and Juliet and is pretty much a romantic tragedy, certainly not a comedy.

It's the only "serious" musical that came to mind though - there may be others. Oh - Les Miserables? I've never actually seen it (stage or movie) but that's pretty serious I guess.

As for this film -- I'm watching it for the first time right now, and I can't believe I've never heard of it before!

And I didn't know what to expect. I didn't actually realize it was supposed to be funny until a coupla things - the Baldwin/Brand moment, the hamster etc. So now I'm adjusting my internal meter.
