Tom Cruise is awesome in this

That alone should cause a high rating. I really can't understand why it's so low. Nice story, cool characters (even the girl is quite bearable, you get used to her annoying voice), and most importantly, the songs! Everybody loves those!

But, again, Tom Cruise is awesome as Stacee!! Hahah! He's always the same badass in movies, so I loved seeing him as the crazy rock star. He really stole the show, in my opinion. But Alec was great too. :)

The movie is incredibly mediocre. It's like high school Musical set in their twenties, more or less.
That being said I could not agree more about Tom Cruise. He appears to be the only actor putting in effort. His renditions of the songs are actually sung by him, and he trained to be able to play the part in the best way he could. All of that effort comes out on screen and makes for a pretty enjoyable experience.

I was ready to stop watching until he came into play. I agree with everyone who says he is far and away the best part of this movie.

reply

I agree with everybody. I'm not even a TC fan and he was my favorite in this movie.

I've finally had to just admit to myself that even though I think TC's a whackadoo, he does seem to understand what his job actually consists of. He really is a talented actor, and I've never heard of him being anything other than unfailingly polite and gracious with fans. I'm a sci-fi fan, and damned if he doesn't pretty consistently make ones that I enjoy.

I agree with you. Cruise is pretty far out there, but it is necessary for us the audience to forget who these actors are in reality and let them entertain us, because lets face it: Tom is great at what he does and he clearly understands his duties as a performer and is willing to go all out to prepare and perfect his role.

He is so great when he doesn't take himself seriously. I loved him in this and Tropic Thunder. So out of the ordinary!

I'm still waiting for that "Les Grossman" movie...

Tom Cruise is excellent in this movie, he really does steal the show. I really liked Paul Giamatti's performance as well. The rest of the cast was also good except for the lead actors IMO.

reply

I thought he should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor nod for his performance in this.

Yes, Tom Cruise is without a doubt the best part. Given how famous he is in real life, I feel like this is the hidden no-filter rock star version of the celebrity we all think he is, even if he's not (it's debatable). In short, I feel very much like he's playing himself, only as a rock star and not a movie star.

Oh, by no means is this a "good" movie, for sure. But I do enjoy it all thanks to Cruise, I think he succeeded in saving it despite his limited screentime. I listen to his covers of Paradise City, Wanted Dead or Alive and Pour Some Sugar On Me just as much as I listen to the original versions of said songs. But you're not wrong. Everybody in Hollywood who knows about this movie knows it is a laughingstock.

I loved Tom Cruise in this movie, too. I didn't even like the movie much, but he is worth watching it. And his singing wasn't bad either, I was really surprised to find out that he did his own singing!

I am not a Tom Cruise fan, I hate Scientology, and I've never been a big fan of his acting. He should try to find more character roles like Stacee Jax. He was awesome here.

It's a shame that the writing wasn't better, and the director didn't get the comedy timing right because this movie could've been brilliant. The cast all did a great job, though.

Yeah Tom Cruise was the highlight in this film, a phenomenal, intense, and charismatic performance!
