How do you get $200m to make your first feature?
A first time director gets a $200m budget? And, big surprise, it bombs.
I imagine some studio exec is updating his resume about now.

It crossed my mind too when I saw his name .
share@freemanpatrick7 Crazy, right? And After Earth got an experienced director who they were too embarrassed to mention in the trailer.
At least The Lone Ranger got something right - it had an experienced director and wasn't afraid to say who it was.

He was Ridley Scott's protege and had that short film "The Gift" that made him hot property for a while....he actually had another big movie he was handed but chose to do this one.
shareYeah, that movie was PROMETHEUS. It started as an actual ALIEN prequel featuring our beloved Xenomorphs. Ridley Scott's son-in-law Carl Rinsh (47 Ronin) was set to direct. But as things turned out... Fox did not want him and hired Scott instead.
sharewait a minute, he made 'the gift'?
nuff said. bringing katie holmes boobies to the screen deserves praise
Nepotism is alive and well and living in Hollywood.
shareExcept this particular director is not related to anyone well-known...
shareI wonder if directors suck nobs to get the chair
OH VEY, YOU LIKE MY CHUTZPAH CARL? THAT'S A GOOD GOYIM
According to Time.com it's $175 million but it's still an unbelievable amount. Anyway, I won't be seeing it after reading about it now, seems ok but not good enough to go to
share...it's $175 million but it's still an unbelievable amount...And they refused to screen it for critics! A brave decision!
He's married to Ridley Scott's daughter.
shareUh...no, he is married to a Uruguayan model. I don't know, maybe he was married to Scott's daughter before.

I guess Ridley's star must be on the wane...
You can't palm off a second-rater on me. You gotta remember I was in the pink!
Despite popular belief. Not all movies are made by the director.
Sometimes a director is just there to direct the scenes but not actually make the movie. Those movies are more producer/ studio run. They are contractually obligated to just be there and help out and being very influenced by the producers and the studios.
I don't blame this movie on the director nor his inexperience. Some movies don't even need experienced directors in it because the crew just does all the work for him/her. Some execs even claim that anybody on the street can direct if they really want.
Albeit
Everyone did a bad job not just directing.
The writing was terrible.
The Animation was okay.
The fights scenes were above average.
The Soundtrack was below average
The Cinematography went from good to bad to good.
If I blame anyone, it would be the studio. The director was probably given a script, given a team to work with and was given instructions on how to make it.
All the same even with a large crew someone has to be the person charged with being the go to person on all on set creative decisions if for no other reason than there has to be a judge in the event that there is a conflict among the team about a specific item. With that said, this movie didn't flop because it was made by a first time director. Looking at the trailer the images he got were beautiful. The movie flopped because it has no marketable concept. The trailers present no interesting conflicts, no compelling what if scenarios, no hint of a good laugh or two. Just people looking grim waving swords around and stuff blowing up. What's this movie about? Beats me.

Keanu Reeves directed Man of Tai Chi, not Carl Rinsch. Rinsch's prior narrative directing credits dating back to 1994 consist of only three short films.
Tai Chi, Reeves, lone director credit, grossed less than $2 million on a budget of $25 million.
