Simone's Illness

This wasn't a major plot point, but I'm curious to know what Simone's "illness" was. Based on her actions, it seems like she could have been feigning appendicitis or kidney stones; however, these can be life-threatening and don't align with John's comment about how Simone's treatment would be considered "elective surgery," and therefore "not covered" by the insurance company. If anyone has a more informed opinion I would be interested to hear it!

We know there was no real illness. The OP put "illness" in quotation marks, which indicates that he or she knows the illness was a lie. We ALL know this because we watched the movie, so calm down. Also, you're not understanding the point of this thread. The question is what is the fake illness. What was Simone pretending to have? We know it's fake, but what was she faking? That's the question and that's the point of this thread. Despite the illness being faked, asking what was being faked is a legitimate question.

reply

Well the real illness was there was no illness. She was a cold hearted bitch and manipulated a guy into thinking she loved him and got him to commit a crime.

reply

Thank you for mentioning that. Can't believe some people didn't notice that she faked it(in more than one way most likely).

reply

yes, she faked it, but what illness was she faking that she had? I agree with the person who said endometriosis, which can be incredibly painful but not deadly. Therefore, the hysterectomy to remove everything and get rid of the endometriosis would indeed be considered elective surgery, sadly. Smart of her to pick something like that, very smart indeed.

A sociopathic con person doesn't have to be medically specific about the condition they're faking if the person they're fooling is just a career criminal that's probably not too bright to begin with. John doesn't seem like much of a fact checker, if you know what I mean.

If he had to call 911, he'd probably sum it up as "Dude! She got some girl stuff wrong with her!"

reply

Well, just because he wasn't a medical expert doesn't mean she could could just say any old damn thing and he wouldn't question it. Clearly, by the fact that he referred to an 'elective surgery', he knew what the surgery would be, on what body part, and why. He cared about her. He would want to know details of what is wrong with her, especially if he is willing to rob a bank to help her. He didn't seem like that much of an idiot to me.

Could have been fibroid tumors in her uterus. They are totally benign but can cause much pain. Most insurers consider it elective unless you have extreme pain, heavy/prolonged menses, etc. to the nth degree. Only then will they pay for surgical removal. So some women play up the symptoms accordingly.

reply

I think that she was faking either fibroid tumors or endometriosis. Either would entail elective surgery. It wouldn't really matter, because men don't know diddily squat about women's reproductive organs and probably wouldn't check to see about it...he'd just take her at her word. Better for her to fake something like that than something that he might know something about.

"Well, yeah, they're baby-eating badasses man, what more do you need to know?"

reply

She just faked acute endometriosis, nothing else.

When watching, I first thought it was an ectopic pregnancy, before she was shown to be involved. That could explain the pain in the side of her abdomen, but that would be a medical emergency, not elective. Uterine fibroids is the best bet, except that she was proven to be a criminal later, so it was all a lie. GREAT movie, we just happened upon it on Netflix and were riveted! Wish it had gotten better play, DHP was phenomonal!

I think she had a strangulated hernia.
