A Cinematic Waterloo for Scott

Terrible film on all levels failed at everything
Phoenix is miscast IMO way too old for many scenes and not inspiring at all looks like the Joker dressed up as Napoleon a very dull performance by Phoenix
The main focus of the film is Josephine and the military and political life of Napoleon is just in the background
The battles were ambitious but look small and very short
The whole Napoleon and Josephine relationship is SUPER BORING and they are trying too much to make her look as superior because of modern neofeminism&wokeism
The sex scenes were unnecessary IMO no point at all it's like watching a leaked sex tape on TMZ...
I liked the very first scene with the execution of Marie Antoinette I like some moments in the battles but they were too short I liked the costumes and scenery amazing production design but overall this movie is not the 'Napoleonic Gladiator' that many expected it is the antithesis of Gladiator which was a masterpiece that celebrated manhood and how you confront stoically adversity and hate
by others,Gladiator still had some old school cinema magic(copied Braveheart actually)
Napoleon is dull hollow no emotion at all it is a post modern film of modern Hollywood and the epitome of modern Woke Hollywood's problems
It's sad very sad Napoleon deserved better he is a historical figure that commanded the trajectory of History a whole era was named after him he is top 10 historical figures ever like Alexander the Great,Julius Caesar,Augustus,Constantine the Great,Ghenghis Khan,Justinian I,Charlemagne Colombus Hitler etc

I have to say that I agree with pretty much all of this.

Ridley’s ‘historical’ films tend to be bore-fests. Gladiator was good but it’s overrated.

Dude should be completing his Alien prequel trilogy before he croaks.

reply

That is probably why it is now No.6 in US box office, behind Disney's Wish, which started at the same time and it is a known dog.

What is even sadder is that it opened less than a Beyoncé concert movie.

A blockbuster about Napoleon should have done better than this.

Yes, at times Phoenix looks a little too old. The same way Colin Farrell looked too young in Alexander most of the time. But the cinematography is still great.
And that Josephine played a bigger role in the life of Napoleon Bonaparte is a fact, not woke. It is not surrender to feminism when you pay a little more respect to your wife.

But how many men are interested in Napoleon's romantic life?

How many women are interested in Napoleon at all?

I think you can see why such a movie not doing well at box office.

reply

Well, I was definitely not interested in 2 hours of battlefield scenes only 😏 Are women in general interested in history? I only know a few who are.
I loved the cinematography. I loved the way how David's painting of the coronation was re-transformed into a life scenario. That was somehow brilliant. Chapeau.

I am not talking about just history, more specifically about a male career military officer and conqueror, full of what they call "toxic masculinity" these days.

reply

A male career military man and conqueror who had - according to this movie - also his weak moments.
Much more remarkable than pseudo-feminist fantasies like The Woman King... 🤮

reply

Well, those are more like Disney movies these days, are basically agenda driven, I think calling them propaganda is not an exaggeration.
