For someone like myself who knew nothing about Napoleon I was so confused...

What the film begins with him receiving a promotion? Can we get some backstory as to how he even got involved in the French revolution? Guess not...

Backstory:
I think America saw injustice and wanted to help. We wanted to liberate the country of France and put an end to the dictator regime there. Implement American democracy and create world peace.

reply

America always has the best interest of the foreign country they help

reply

Whaaaaat? I know “blame America first” is big on MovieChat but the U.S. had zero role in the French Revolution. American administrations were at best, neutral on the French Republic and then openly hostile when the chaos erupted. Republican France quickly became more authoritarian than the monarchy it replaced. The U.S. ceased paying its own war debt to France and the two countries fought an open naval war in the West Indies. You have a crazy view of history here.

The French Revolution was god awful brutal. I remember reading Charles Dicken’s “A Tale of Two Cities” how they would put someone on trial and if the person was found innocent they would just put him/her on trial again the next day. They beheaded Antoine Lavoisier who was basically the father of modern chemistry.

reply

I don't know either. Maybe there is a prequel in the works

reply

It’s probably going to be in the damn directors cut that Scott doubtlessly has up his sleeve.

reply

He was just a career military type who happened to choose the correct sides during The days of the Revolution whenever there was any sort of schism and it allowed him to be in the favor of whoever started to wield power….really wasn’t much more than that.

reply

Well said.

reply

He was actually arrested and jailed because he was close to Robespierre's and the Jacobins.

reply

Yes, he was on their side when it was a good thing…and was able to switch sides when it was a good thing to do so.
