Fan films
Are there any other examples of a successful film made by fans?
Other than splicing together little trailers, I've never seen one of this scale.

You are incorrect about the budget, which was only 3,000 pounds ($4,500 U.S. dollars).

I understand that everyone volunteered for this film. They also shared props/costumes etc. with Born of Hope, another LOTR film in production.
This is most definitely a fan film as it was made by dedicated Tolkien fans purely for the love of the material and for no financial reward at all. Size of budget and quality of the product is irrelevant.

A fan film is a film made by fans for the love of the material.
A Fan Film made by people that have no film making experience but are such big fans, they decided to make their own amateur movie is a movie made by such big fans that despite having no film making experience they decided to make their own amateur movie.
There is no real difference!

The ones that I've liked and that are an extension or side story to the main thing are Return of the Ghostbusters, Freddy vs the Ghostbusters and Troops. Also Batman Dead End.
Haven't watched Hunt for Gollum yet (actually it is downloading at this moment) but something tells me l'll ne adding it to the list after watching it.

Fan film IMO and that of most is a completely amateur production. That's your own private definition.
Wow... all great examples I'll check out...
I just posted to warn everyone against Tomb Raider: Ascension. A friend of mine bought me the DVD (yep they're trying to make money off this stinker) and it is NOTHING like HfG... Acting stinks, direction is worthless, they show way too much they couldn't acheieve and the stunts are ridiculous...

Acting stinks, direction is worthless, they show way too much they couldn't acheieve and the stunts are ridiculous...'Jon Death' will love this.
