Didn't the first Mulan movie have a "disco" ending w/the elders? (totally out of place-I didn't like it - but like the movie overall)

reply

His dancing got huge laughs when I saw it. I was fine with it.

reply

Actually I found it quite offensive - considering the time and place.

The movie is for little kids - yes, with enough humor for adults to enjoy as well, but basically aimed at little kids - *and* Gru's audience is three prepubescent girls.

What is with the pelvic thrusts and the butt slapping? And what was with Vector slapping his butt on the moon ( not to mention his pelvic thrusts when he was definining the word vector.) Totally unsuitable for a kid's movie. They're sexualized early enough, was it really necessary to do it here?

Barbara, aren't you being a bit sensitive? How are Gru and Vector over sexualized things? Do you really think little kids care? Do you realize that this movie is rated PG and not G?

I know, a lot of questions but think about it.

I think you need to give little kids more credit and don't believe that some butt slapping and pelvic thrusts are going to cause then to have underage sex!

Oooooooooh! Stuffed crust!
I'll stuff you all in the crust!

I took it as more like the Harlem Boys' Choir. They do a classic Christmas Carol in the traditional way, well enough to convince the suits to say to themselves, "hey these kids are good!"

Then when they capture the suits' attention, they'll do a jazzy one.

I'm with the OP that all these animated movies end in a disco dance.
The only annoying thing in the movie.

<<House: Oh, I'm sorry. Is suicide taboo? .... I could kill myself!>>

reply

Yeah, seriously. The pelvic thrusts and Gru's dancing were clearly played for laughs. Overprotective parents are getting ridiculous...

we can go even further back - shrek.

I agree with the OP as well... but honestly, it probably works for the vast majority of the families that this kind of film is aimed at. Teenagers and young adults may be getting annoyed at this, but you really can't demand a change when you're not the main target audience.

It's a proven way of winding down an animated film, and while I really hope they eventually 'evolve' past this, we likely won't see a change until some studio execs dare to think outside the box.

reply

Kids love it, and at our theatre, kids (and sometimes adults) get up and dance along.

reply

Not to mention EVERY Shrek movie.

reply

I'm with the OP - I had the exact same thought when watching the ending. It would have been finer and more original (because it's not done anymore) to just let it fade out with the ballet dance.
It always feels like as if the movie celebrate itself - in words of 'I'm so cool, let's celebrate'. My answer to that such a movie is 'no, you're not cool - at least not with such an ending'.

reply

Oh I so agree with you and the OP on this one, time to give up with this cringe-inducing dancing schtick at the end of your animated movie, seriously. I liked it the first time I saw it (in one of the Shrek movies perhaps?) but now it's just lame. It's like the writers don't know how to end a story so let's "just paaaartyyy!" our way into the credits. I'm sure little kids love it every time it occurs but if we take film as an art form then it really lowers my appreciation for it. It just comes across as lazy and contrived. Despicable Me was a good film, it didn't pander to too many of the pop culture references and jokes that so many animated films fall victim to these days so it was a bit of a let-down that they went down this path to close out the film. Time for me to close out my argument now so everybody gather round. Cue the dance hall lighting. Maestro, hit the music! "Let's daaaance!"

reply

Eh heh heh, I'm torn. On the one hand, I love seeing characters dance, and usually enjoy it when they do that at the end and/or during the credits. It has been done a number of times now, some much better than others, and could be considered a sort of lovable cliché. Still, perhaps they could give it a rest for a little while, especially when it feels as if they're just attempting to pump you up at the end so that you leave a rather mediocre film feeling upbeat and energetic, and thus remembering it as being better (hypothetically...Chicken Little kind of felt that way. It was a cute movie, but I didn't really feel that it was worth the price of admission. Truthfully, had I seen Despicable Me in the theater, I may have felt almost the same way; but I liked it a lot at home, especially towards the middle/end.)

reply

Hi :)

At first, I had the same feeling. But I saw that Margo, Edith and Agnes enjoyed it too made me feel more than delighted to watch that scene with minimum dissatisfaction.

Can't wait to see DM2 :)

I definitely agree with the OP. That ending dance scene was cringetastic at its best (or worst).

reply

Most Steve Carell movies end this way. 40 Year Old Virgin and Evan Almighty to name two. It's becoming a worrying trend.

The Yogi movie, apparently has a scene where they dance to hiphop. I'm not checking if this is true, i've no intention of ever seeing it.

Old Disney movies sometimes ended with a song, Still, why do we need to see the characters dancing? Since Shrek all CG flicks seemed to be doing it. Why? I mean Why?

reply

I guess I am a true child of the 70s, as I LOOOOOOOOVE disco.

reply

Agreed. The movie FINALLY won me over (it was a snoozer for a good deal of the time), then the disco "finale" just blew it, IMO.

I was really loving the movie, was loving the sentimental ending then...ugh, a dance number. Of course. Of COURSE!! Can't end an animated film without a dance number! I agree completely. Enough already with that.
