Awesome serie , but , why give some characters those weird voices??

the production manager Robert with his big glasses and the mafia boss Joe, why on earth give them those weird funny voices?? Also the CEO, he has an Austrian accent which is normal but why add a weird voice??

except that i am loving the first 3 episodes, truly captivating and fun.

The only one that really distracts me is the nasal voice by the actor playing Pacino. He overdid it.

You don't think the big producer guy is over doing it ten times more than Pacino? And you said it better than me, ''nasal voice'' was the expression i was looking for rather than ''weird funny voices'' that i wrote.

reply

I am not hearing any weird voices there, but the French actress has an oddly low voice. Not weird but surprisingly baritone.

That is a great observation. I’ve only watched one episode and now that you mention it I do notice the characters voices. I’m honestly not sure why. Only guess would be that since this series covers several people, places and events that are highly iconic and nostalgic, they added some style to it. The writing is cool, they put a lot of emphasis on the wardrobe of the period and so maybe the director told them to ham it up a little. I like it, as it doesn’t seem to be taking itself too seriously and just go along for the ride.

You are not, not ever shall be, ee cummings. Capitalize, asshole.

Second, the word is serieS, not serie.

I’ve watched all but the last episode. I think the style of this series is deliberately 70s kitsch and pulp. It shows how the making of this film both contrasts and parallels the film itself, in different ways. The circus of oddball characters create so many conflicts and obstacles. Hollywood execs, NYC mob bosses, muscle men, artistic visionaries, bean counters, etc, etc. I notice the characters who hold power are the most mannered and over-emphasized. I think this emphasizes how Ruddy and his sidekick Betty had to bounce off all these personalities like pinballs in order to get this movie made.

Columbo's voice was RIDICULOUS.
2 octaves lower than the actor's real voice.

Giovanni Ribisi also seemed a lot heavier -- especially in the face -- than in previous roles. Make-up or pasta dinners?

reply

Ribisi’s voice was the only one I found distracting. His vocal characterization was so obviously false, amateurish. I was always aware it was Ribisi trying to sound like Colombo.
