I just watched this movie today, gave it an 8/10 on IMDB..
I don't get why the movie is rated so low, it really is a great piece in cinema. The story was actually entirely unique and didn't try to pull any cheap tricks.
The acting was amazing by everyone in it and the ending was satisfying albeit a sad one.
The film had a production budget of 3.5 million yet it only seemed to get less than 1 million globally.
So I just was curious what others here (both people who liked and didn't like it) think were the reasons to why the movie performed so poorly?
Couldn't say, but I saw this movie in a motel-room a couple of nights ago and loved it, and I wondered why, here in Australia, I'd never heard of it. It may not be the greatest movie ever made, but it deserves an audience more than some of the moronic offerings that make a tidy profit.
I rented this through Netflix fully expecting a full-blown comedy. While there was the occasional chuckle, it seemed more drama than comedy to me. Not a masterpiece, but an adequate 1hr 43min "escape" from the daily grind. 7.0/10

if anything it's clearly OVERrated. it's got a 7.0/10 average when i would say a low 6's (probably a 6.3 or less) would have been more than enough.
because in my eyes for the average it could be in the high 5's to low low 6's (i.e. somewhere in the 5.5-6.2/10 range for a average)

in my opinion it's simply because it's not all that entertaining. but a 7.0/10 for the average is not a low rating by any means.
a low rating in general to me is more of a 5.x/10 area, maybe low 6's. as by the 7.x/10+ range that's more of a high rating for a average rating on IMDb.
because Kick ass was adviertised better, alot of the brain-dead audiences just thought to watch that and pre-program their minds to like and enjoy that movie more than it actually can be enjoyed so they never looked for titles like defendor.
or... it could simply be because Kick-Ass clearly the more entertaining film ;)
Kick-Ass is much better in my opinion.
Kick-Ass (2010) - 8/10 (2nd best film of 2010) Defendor (2009) - 6/10 (maybe a 5.5) (clearly in Thumbs Down territory)
I totally agree with you; that dark humor makes you smile, but its more a reflexive smile than a situational laugh, because every funny situation fits in the context of the human and his innocence, and its not just looking like a fool to cause a laugh. And, really, I thought that uncomfortable sensation hit specific people, who surley thought: "we don't want to give bizarre ideas, or we're gonna have a lot of vigilantes out there tomorrow", and I think that could be a good reason for the poor marketing.
Because a lot of morons were hoping to "laugh at the retard" and didn't get how the movie was funny. And a whole lot of other morons were hoping for a superhero parody like Deadpool and obviously didn't get it.
Also it was a Canadian indie which probably had 10 (Canadian) bucks for promotion, and not the millions Kick-ass had.

Bleak dark comedy is something only a fraction of people have a taste for, and many people just hate it. That's how _good_ movies that did what they were trying to do get imdb ratings like these:
Life Without Dick (2002) 3.9 Lower Learning (2008) 3.9 Danny Roane: First Time Director (2006) 4.6 Head Of The Family (1996) 5.2 Drowning Mona (2000) 5.6 The Horror of Frankenstein (1970) 5.8
Trying to please everyone can be done -- and generally just brings us junk like Forrest Gump and Up. Oh well.
