What an overrated movie!

I'm really at a loss as to how this movie has been so roundly lauded. I mean a 7.1 rating on IMDB, at time of writing, is pretty damn high for a scary movie. Now, I use the term "scary" rather loosely when referring to this film as it really was anything but.
This film was awfully contrived, predictable, derivative and uninspired. I mean this film is like a poor man's Pet Cemetery (and that was pretty crap too). I have no problem with the micro budget, or even the occasional clunky dialogue, but this film was simply dull, with nothing new to offer. There was no feeling of dread that pervaded the story, nor were the characters particular sympathetic (we need to get to know them for that to happen, or at least it helps).
You know something's wrong when even the great Timothy Spall can't rescue this piece from the realm of mediocrity it so belongs to.
Anyway, just my two cents. Everybody has their own tastes and opinions I guess.

On another note, I just finished watching an excellent Japanese psycho-thriller, Confessions - now there's a movie!

I completely agree! Both Aidan Gillen and Timothy Spall are excellent actors and deserve meatier roles than this. Not to mention the unintentional hilarity of watching a kid who looks like a young Dakota Fanning go around ripping people's hearts out!

I agree. I'm 46 and have been watching and reading horror since I was a teen and I've seen a lot of it. I gave this a 4 because it wasn't really filmed too poorly, nor was the acting that bad but the story was just boring, boring, boring. I paused the movie somewhere near the end to go do something else, and even though I don't usually leave even a bad movie unfinished, when I came back and the dvd player had turned the whole movie off, I didn't bother to turn it back on. I just took it out and put something else in.

Even if it was some kind of Hammer films throwback or whatever fans of this movie are calling it, I didn't see any scariness or creepiness in this flick, nothing that made me shudder even a little. If they were going to use concepts from other films, they could've thrown something really original in it too, actually if one is going to use any ideas from other films, then a whole lot of original ideas are needed to buffer the things that have become cliches to most long time horror fans. This movie seemed to be just a bunch of event sequences that group of young teens could've written. The whole concept just didn't flow very well.
