Because he's the smart one? I know that this is a nit-pick to end all nit-picks. But Donnie was my favorite growing up, he already has all that "science" crap on his head, now he's wearing glasses over his mask because apparently smart people need glasses? Can you get any lazier? Where's his pocket protector?

Not sure how accurate this is, but I read online somewhere that in the early stages of the script (but after the alien origin was scrapped, thank God), Donnie was supposed to have developed some sort of psychic powers while he was mutating, but it messed up his vision at an early age. So that's why he needed glasses.
BUUT this is probably some weird rumor that started awhile back and they just decided to keep the glasses because "all nerds wear glasses."
I guess you could say he suffered mild eye damage when the fire broke out, but that's a whole different area.

Adults treat them like they're idiots because back then kids didn't need to see Donny wearing glasses to know he was the smart one. He displayed his smartness with all the devices he would make.
