I'm a huge BSG fan and although I've never watched SG-1, the premise for SG-Universe intrigues me! Was the show cancelled? If so did they have the opportunity to tie up loose ends beforehand, ala Dollhouse, or was it axed suddenly? Also is it worth watching in general?

Yes, if you are into what some wannabe-SG-connoisseurs with a niche for what they might consider eclectic interpretations of abstract ideas as presented through an artistic or poetic message as presented through the writers and producers of the show.
No, if you are into a show that actually has an ending.
Can you interpret it as having an ending? Sure.
Does it leave you hanging? Sure.
Take it as you will.

SGU ends with the entire crew, except for Eli, asleep in stasis pods, while the ship flies off into the distant universe.
The style with which the final scene in the final episode was produced feels somewhat like a conclusion, yet the plot contains several unresolved plot points.
The writers wrote the final episode assuming that they would receive a 3rd season. They even commented on how, in the past, they wrote conclusions to seasons that they thought would be the end of one of the SG series, only to find out it was renewed; and they pointed out the irony in how the opposite happened with the cancellation of SGU.
Of course, the spoiler above may not make much sense without first watching the rest of the series but, trust me, it ends with a lot of loose ends.
Not sure what the people who say about a meaning to the ending are talking about. They did not complete their mission and we dont even know who survived and if the sick got cured or if they were destroyed. Although the story was only getting started and in BSG they would have found the temple and left it there..

Yes, the show was canceled. The producers realized the axe might fall towards the end of season two and they wrote the s2 finale so that it could serve as either a season or series finale. So it doesn't resolve all of the plotlines and even ends on what might technically be called a cliffhanger. It ends the story in such a way that if they had gotten another season they could have gone on from there. But it also ends in a way which I think is emotionally and thematically satisfying from a storytelling standpoint.
Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.
Caprica had a much better ending when they found out the show was being canceled. They just fast forwarded the story line to at least achieve closure. STU on the other hand should have done a better job considering the much higher budget. There were too many open issues for major characters to have a decent closure.
shareNever heard of STU, but SGU wasn't cancelled until after the entire series had already been written and filmed. It had to be left open-ended in case of a renewal. The budget wasn't much higher either, not that that's really relevant.

The show doesn't have a definitive conclusion in the way that BSG did, but on the plus side it didn't reach for a series of wild dues ex machinas either.

I thought it had a satisfying conclusion.
That last shot of Eli said it all - it was the look of someone who'd finally discovered his greater "Destiny," so to speak.
We don't know what happens next, but his arc is complete.
Eli's character arc had only just begun. That is the exact opposite of a satisfying conclusion. His arc was left very incomplete.
shareThis show is a crying shame. First half of season 1 was horribly boring. Second half showed promise. Season 2 is where it started getting really good and by about episode 6 of s2 you could see they hit their groove but by then it was too late.
The show ends horribly only because we want more and nothing gets resolved
I'm a huge BSG fan so trust me when I tell you, you'll like the show. The ending was distasteful but what ending isn't. I would watch it all over again. In fact I want to own it.

At least I didn't think so. It boasts some visually stunning special effects though.

Eli standing on the deck at the end with the others in stasis and the ship potentially failing the mission is not a solid conclusion. Sure, the writer-producers inserted the bit after that mirroring the first episode with everything shutting down instead of "booting up". That's just an insert to end it. The actual story, itself, leaves the viewers hanging. SGU ended on a huge cliffhanger.
