Conservative Christians thought their boycott would work, lol.

shareDated article. No Last Supper parody.
shareYes, it was a Last Supper mockery. It was in the title, in it's creator's original description, and in the central figure's tweets. Then when they got called on it, they tried to deny it. Trying to spin it a some kind of "Dionysus" thing is pure gaslighting.
shareIt was very unconvincing damage control.
"It was in the title, in it's creator's original description, and in the central figure's tweets."
Do you have a link which shows all of that? I'd love to read it.
"it's creator's original description"
No, it wasn't.
You didn't watch the Opening, therefore you have no idea what was in it.
They wouldn't have apologized if they thought they hadn't done what they were accused of doing. Only a moron would believe they were actually mimicking some obscure painting.
shareOr maybe they were referencing the painting, and didn't realize that American's wouldn't know it.
shareEuropeans didn't know it either. I didn't even know about this Dutch painting. Someone (was it even a representitive?) came with this supposed explanation much later. Even if I would buy that, it should've been clear to most involved that people were going to interpret it as The Last Supper instead.
shareWell when you compare the tableau and the painting, it's pretty apparent what they were going for.
shareNo, it didn't look a thing like that particular (and very obscure) painting, the composition and viewpoint is completely different. I don't think it was apparent to anyone who was not involved. Only the blue guy could possibly be compared to the satyr-like creatures from that painting, but that alone does not mean that's what it was referring to. I mean, if you're going to a parodize a Christian painting anyway, why not add the Greek god of debauchery...
The opening ceremony was also totally trashy, so it deserved all the criticism it got.
They repeatedly complained about things that never existed.
