James McAvoy overacting....

Am I the only one that thought that James McAvoy overacted terribly in this movie? I'm a big X-men fan and was super excited to see the movie, especially a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, but didn't care for McAvoy's performance at all. Michael Fassbender did an amazing job, pretty much the only one who did a good job, and in my opinion made what could have been a terrible movie decent.

reply

I completely disagree, I think McAvoy gave an incredibly nuanced and moving performance, just as good as Fassbender.

Fassy and McAvoy were the only two decent things in the movie

I thought MCAvoy was as Good as Fassbender. They killed it.

And all this time I thought he was Zach Braff (from "Scrubs").

reply

Overacting? I wouldn't consider anything he did to be bombastic, over-the-top, or theatrical at all, really. I thought his performance was low-key and quite good.

Without bothering to pack"

reply

Not even a little bit. His performance was one of the most well balanced. He got Xavier's character just right. He was passionate about defending mutants and their rights. It wasn't over acting.

Xavier is head of the X-Men. He should be a passionate guy. McAvoy conveyed that.

reply

I respect everyone's opinion, but have to disagree with OP. James McAvoy did an excellent job with the character, the time period, hell he and Fassbender made up for the few holes/gaps/issues that I did have with the movie.

Looking forward to his in the next film.

reply

No, he was awesome.

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

reply

his acting was on point. He was better than Fassbender

reply

His acting was decent. Fassbenders acting was good. Everyone else sucked.

reply

I think Jennifer Lawerence managed to capture Mystique quite well and I think Nicholas Hoult was good as Beast.

reply

Fassbender was good? Towards the end of film he was speaking in an Irish accent, up until that point I agree he was good, but the accent kept changing toward the climax.

his acting was on point. He was better than Fassbender

This.
Fassbender is only considered "better" because he played the flashier character and the villain - something that always seems to attract more attention and praise.

McAvoy is a fantastic actor, engaging but also subtle. There's nothing in his performance that could be called "overacting". If the OP really believes this, he/she should come up with examples of moments in the film in which McAvoy overacted.

Ridiculous.

Or watch some Nicholas Cage films!

James McAvoy was excellent in this I thought.

I don't get the love for McAvoy. To each his own.

If I'm being vindictive, I'd say that I don't get the love for Fassbender, and he got a lot more of it than McAvoy ever did for this movie but if I have to be honest, I'd say I do get it. His Magneto was written as a scene stealer and the guy sold it, fluctuating accent notwithstanding. But what I don't get is what's not to love about McAvoy as well. Still, if people insist on remaining blind and missing out on a very good thing, well, what can you do?

You know what's funny, though? I was once blind myself, too. Something about him on the poster rubbed me the wrong way and although I didn't go all irrational and crazy and decided he's a bad actor just based on that alone, I skipped out on the movie when it was first released because I didn't want to be subjected to looking at him. I'm being completely honest. The complete 180 only came about when I somehow got exposed to some of the earlier things he did a few months later, and his acting reached into me bone deep. Few actors ever manage to do that for me, no matter how excellent they are. So it's not just skill, but something else that's intangible but highly palpable. This thing resonated with me a lot, and I've only ever felt the same for four other actors so far (and no, Hanks and Day-Lewis and Washington aren't among them). Then I realized he was the guy whose face I irrationally disliked upon first seeing it on the XMFC poster. Still, I stubbornly stayed away for a good year more as I wasn't a big fan of CBMs but I eventually caved for the guy--and wondered why I stayed away at all. His Prof X, cad as he is, is a hard one to not like ('cept when he's saying stupid insensitive things). So I didn't even try. :)

Anyway, no matter if you don't get it. Your loss. And the OP's.

Okay, okay. No need to get your panties in a twist. I deliberately left them out because they are my own personal favorites and I wasn't sure if people really cared. Anyway, these other four whose acting got to me deep are Gary Oldman, Robin Williams, Tilda Swinton and Jeremy Renner.

I've a thing for chameleons who can both be over the top and infinitely subtle, whom while are as great as other superb actors when it comes to acting with their bodies, they have a lesser-acknowledged ability of telling stories with only their eyes and minute movements, it seems.

You're welcome, luv.

reply

Yes, we all get that you hate McAvoy and are out to *destroy* his career with your rants. <Can't even type that without laughing. REALLY wish there was a sarcasm font!

And hands down? Really? Worse than Pauly Shore? lol

So what's the deal? Did he piss in your cereal or something? Just wow.

May I ask then who you consider to be a good working actor today within the same age range of McCavoy and Gordon Levitt? I don't know about you but I agree with the general consensus of the public, which is that McCavoy and Gordon Levitt are two of the best young actors working in Hollywood today.

I'm not in any way saying that Gordon Levitt deserves to be placed on the same level as Gary Oldman (he's nowhere close at this point), but come on how can you say he's a bad actor? 500 Days of Summer is damn classic, Inception was very overrated but he was good in it, 50/50 was really good (as was his performance in it), and Mysterious Skin was absolutely amazing.

Excited for this movie mainly because of the cast

reply

Really weak script, god aweful standard pulp music score, shots & direction on par with Ice Age. MaCavoy was just tolerable given the script, wanted these characters to be far more interesting. Jennifer wasn't challenged at all & Mystique working as a waitress, pluheezze...lame script period

reply

She was possibly making that "Waitressing" part up.
