Upgrade - what Venom should have been

Now , I am not one of those MCU fan boys who only think that Marvel movies are best , but Upgrade and Venom have many similarities that made me think that.

The Voice in the head of someone else controlling your body.

That someone else makes you a superhuman killing machine.

The dark humour

A bit irrelevant - but damn , both movies' lead look so damn alike.

Ending my comparison here, I must say, Upgrade does have a lot to its merit . I was blown away by the fact that this movie had a small budget of less than 10 Million dollars.

The production design in that amount of money looks insane, especially the visual effects! I was thinking maybe it won't have that great effects, but they were top notch.

The direction of the movie is pretty tight. Once the action starts, its a great movie . My only issue is that it took 40 minutes for a 90 minutes long action movie to actually start the action.

A lot of time wasted in the beginning but those 50 minutes were sweet, so all good.

Cinematography is brilliant. The camera work during action sequences is really innovative.

Unlike Venom, this movie actually has a strong villain ( who isn't just disposable ) . There are real stakes here and the tension is felt by the viewer, which I think was missing in Venom.

The dark humour lands pretty well ( which also did for Venom , but I found Upgrade better).

The funny thing is it was predicted before Venom came out. Upgrade even had a discount Tom Hardy as its lead.

As soon as Upgrade was released, the comparisons to the upcoming Venom were made, and it was generally believed that Venom would fall flat where Upgrade succeeded.

I think that worked in Venom's favor a bit. People were underestimating it. And then the real Tom Hardy showed he could carry it.

I never thought Venom was a good idea as a movie since I think he works best as a foil to Spider-Man (the original Lethal Protector miniseries was awesome but no other solo Venom stories really grabbed me since).

That said, this movie could've used a better villain for sure. Riot was just an evil(er) Venom and since we will be getting Carnage as a badguy in the next flick, it lessens his impact as well. I think they should have gone for the Jury or something.

True! Upgrade was a lot better.
