Doesn't it kind of miss the point if Frank is a woman?

The whole point of Frank 'N' Furter is that he's a transvestite, is it not? How can a woman dressed as a woman be called a transvestite? Yes, she's a transgender woman, but that doesn't make her any less of a woman. If Laverne Cox uses the pronouns she and her than that would make her a woman and make her casting make no sense. I just think it kind of loses the punch if Frank is a woman, nothing sticks out about the character then and it makes the song Sweet Transvestite make very little sense.

They should have cast The Rock as Frank. That would have been hilariously awful.

That's 'so bad it's good' level B-movie glory!

That at least would have been interesting and added the level of "WTF?" that a 2016 re-boot of Rocky Horror would need.

reply

Omg! Thank you! I'm going to the er tomorrow for blood sugar issues and you made me laugh out loud literally! The rock in that role would be so funny! And awful!

reply

I would still watch it though lol!

The Rock would have been great as Rocky Horror. We'll see how this goes. I did like the first few minutes that has been broadcast, and really that is the part I wanted to see the most.

Drop a blotter before watching it and all of this won't matter... ;)

Heh... Nothing "sticks out" about the character? Exactly!

If Brian Bedford and David Suchet can play Lady Bracknell in "The Importance of Being Earnest," I don't see anything wrong with a woman being cast in the role of Frankenfurter. But if you're going to fill Tim Curry's platforms you had better have one hell of a concept for your Frankie, and the ability to knock out the audience with it.

Come back to Planet Earth from Politically Correct Pluto. Laverne Cox is a dude with breasts. She/he would be a great choice for Dr. FranknFurter if she could just act and sing better.

Well she wasn't born a she.. so I think it's fair game..

With that said I didn't mind Lavern's performance but it could never match Tim Curry.. I really disliked the new take on Riff Raff.. he was more of a rock star and less of a frail old looking man with balding hair.. the ending also didn't pack the punch of the original..

I agree with the OP 100%. Maybe if they had cast a more flat-chested woman they could have gone for a Victor/Victoria kind of thing of a woman playing a man playing a drag queen. But to have Frank with giant tits pointing at you makes absolutely no sense. (Frank's seduction of Brad especially loses all its subversive subtext. In fact, Brad's entire transformational journey has been eliminated.) Plus, people kept referring to Frank as "she" (and yelling "Brava") while Riff Raff called him/her "master" not "mistress." It totally muddies the entire point of the show.

Considering there was absolutely no reason to remake something that was already perfect, I am relieved that the producers have at least treated the original script as canon, keeping it extremely faithful to the original. OK, the acting is terrible, everyone is obviously trying way too hard to be "campy" and the drama and tone suffer for it. Riff Raff is the only actor who is not a total embarrassment. But I'm glad the script is intact and all the songs are there (neutered of course, but hey it's network TV). I could have easily seen them justifying cutting the Zen room scene or even "Sword of Damocles" or "Eddie's Teddy" or "Planet Schmanet Janet" but they remained very respectful to the script at least, if not the tone. Or the theme. Or the point.
