The whole point of Frank 'N' Furter is that he's a transvestite, is it not? How can a woman dressed as a woman be called a transvestite? Yes, she's a transgender woman, but that doesn't make her any less of a woman. If Laverne Cox uses the pronouns she and her than that would make her a woman and make her casting make no sense. I just think it kind of loses the punch if Frank is a woman, nothing sticks out about the character then and it makes the song Sweet Transvestite make very little sense.
You have to keep in mind that this is a tribute. Not a literal remake. It's not uncommon for women to play the character of Frank N Furter. In fact, the very first person to ever play Frank 'N' Furter in the audience participation was a woman. As you can clearly see right here... https://hartleyworks.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/1-tim_dori_paradise_garage.jpg
I know Joan Jett played Columbia. Did she play Frank as well? I've never heard that. I know that Sandra Bernhard played Frank, and I think she could really nail the character as Frank, and she's androgynous enough to make it work. Laverne was too feminine and lacking any androgyny to make it work. I enjoyed her performance for what it was, but it was a huge mistake that turned off many fans from even giving the show a chance. It would've been far better to let Adam Lambert or another man play Frank. Laverne could've been an interesting girl next door Janet. That would've been more shocking, progressive and subversive. Confusing what it means to be a trans person and a transvestite - those terms were never interchangeable - was a disservice to the trans community and Rocky fans.
The point the OP was making is that Cox is NOT a transvestite, but a transgender person. The big fake bosom is off-putting in this role especially since Cox just imitated Curry's original "Sweet Transvestite" in the style and almost the exact timber in which he sang the song, except not nearly as charismatically. It was a travesty and not in a good way. I turned the channel after that number, because Cox was so unappealing as Frank 'N' Furter, who is really the core of the show. The bottom line is that if one cannot relate in some way to the characters, or at least to who is playing them, then the whole exercise is one of futility. The wrong person was cast to play the -- Lead -- so the entire production was a colossal waste of time and money as a result.
There's nothing odd/unusual/kink about a woman wearing fishnets and 4-inch heels. The whole reason Tim Curry was able to play it off so well was because he was somehow massively masculine while wearing very feminine clothing. I mean, he's kind of a dudely dude, lol. It wouldn't have worked well with a man who was built like a woman. IDK, is the actress playing a male transvestite in the movie? Just because they are transgender female doesn't mean they can't play male/female/tran roles.
To me, it would be confusing. F-N-F was "manly enough" to pique Janet's interest, but the underlying wink was always that the reason Brad was attracted to him, too, was because he was masculine, not because he came off as a sexy woman. It was very wink-wink.
If Frank-N-Furter is played by a woman, then it would have to be reversed -- Brad would obviously have to be attracted to her as a woman, and then the inside joke would have to be that secretly Janet had the hots for her too, because she secretly is turned on by women. Is that even a thing that can be made funny anymore? I don't know.
I don't think it can be as successful. But then, a large part of the audience might be younger people who never "got" the dynamics of the first movie. And, a lot has changed since then, anyway. Being a transvestite/transgender/bi-curious person isn't as titillating as it was 40 years ago. And, the average suburban American was more uptight like the old Brad and Janet back then, whereas now that stereotype doesn't seem likely, unless the director made them religious or something.
I haven't seen it, so who knows. I think I understand what you mean, though. Perhaps it will be more like a theater play or something.
In their defense, I think they knew that nobody could top Tim Curry so they went as far from it as they could. I'm intrigued mostly because I know that it won't be as good as 1975, but it COULD be good in its own way...
"Transvestite" is not limited to men dressing as women, but denotes simply dressing as the opposite sex. So, a woman can also be a transvestite when dresses as a man. (Which -Â admittedly - is not the case here.)
Transsexual - One who believes that they were born into the wrong body.
Crossdresser - Sexual fetishist.
Transvestite - Someone dresses as the opposite sex in order to attract a same sex partner.
Some people only embody a single characteristic of "trans", while others may move freely about all three definitions.
While I recognize that these are the technical explanations for these things I just need to point out that Frank-N-Furter is "Just a sweet Transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania" which is, in this instance, more equivalent To saying I'm a Bostonian from Boston New York, than it is to him declaring all the labels he fits. This is further backed up by the point that at no point during the show does Frank-N-Furter express that he is really anything other than a man who likes to have sex with both sexes and enjoys wearing lingerie. I am aware of the line "I'm not much of a man by the light of day" but since it is immediately followed "but by night I'm one hell of a lover" even that seems more like when a man says something like "I may not seem that masculine but let's go to the bedroom and I'll show you I'm all man"
In any case, since at no point during the show do we actually see Frank-N-Furter's genitals it is perfectly fine to have Lavern Cox or any other woman play him. It's called acting. The same way in the show Hedwig and the Angry Inch the character of Yitzhak is always played by a woman even though the character is a male who dresses like a woman.

Incorrect. Frank is referred to as "he" numerous times -he is male. Richard OBrien himself said Cox's casting was a huge mistake. Sweet T has Cox dressed in lingerie-as a woman so she isn't even a transvestite so the lyrics make no sense.

Where did you find this information because literally the only things I can find him saying about it are that while he's staying detached from the production and isn't sure that it will have quite the same bang as the movie had, something which he isn't sure would have happened if not for Tim Curry, he doesn't want to damn the production before giving them a chance. In other words he's keeping an open mind about it despite his personal reservations about the show being done at all. That and the article where he talks about how a Transwoman can never actually really be a woman even if they've had the surgeries, they can only be the idea of a woman. The same way he views himself as being "other" and wishes that there was an option for "other" rather than having to check the M box for male. I could see him thinking her to be miscast because of singing ability or acting ability, depending on his opinion of those things, but his own personal beliefs would make it weird for him to call it a miscast because of her being a she, since he doesn't really believe her to be such.

Having now read the interview I can say that actually what he said was "I think that it is a project that is misconceived and (sadly for the players) badly cast. The producer and director seem to have missed the point entirely. I will say no more as I may be tempted to say too much." Which doesn't actually specifically call out the casting of Laverne Cox. I am not saying that he's not saying she's part of the problem but since he didn't mention her specifically you are putting words into his mouth. He could have just as easily been talking about Victoria Justice being a terrible choice for Janet,or the bizarre choice of Christina Milian's being cast as Magenta, or any other member of the cast really. He could also mostly be talking about the fact that they deliberately made changes to the show. Honestly if they hadn't decided to change the character of Frank-N-Furter to a she, the way it seems they have, and had Laverne Cox play him as a him, it would have been fine. Again, depending on Laverne Cox ability to sing and act the part.

Hes referring to Cox-obviously. Its ok to infer when that is the only casting choice that sticks out as against his original vision. Having seen the first third of the show, I can attest to his fears. Brad and Janet are fine (Dammit Janet is almost the exact same visually and sang with a few additions). Riff is a little overacted. Magenta (black with a white brother) and Colombia seem wrong, but costuming may be a factor there (and I only saw Time Warp). I also think casting a black guy as the uncle of a white guy is a little bizarre and PC too... Cox cannot sing-shes way over the top and the acting just isn't there. And the transvestite song makes no sense-shes a woman in woman's clothes. The show isn't changed much and I doubt he was privy to any changes made besides casting choices. We'll all see it in its entirety in two weeks!
I will say that Science Fiction/Double Feature is pretty great!
"loses the punch" is the perfect way to put it or maybe "loses the balls" is another one. Dr. Frank 'N' Furter as a fully realized trans-woman makes zero sense and is not even interesting.
I don't understand what the makers of this were trying to achieve, and I suspect neither did they. It sounds like "Let's do Rocky Horror!...We got the money!...We can get Lavern Cox!...Oh I love her!...We can get Adam Lambert...He's a great singer!"...and on and on without any real rhyme or reason. It's just another project that somehow got greenlit.
It will come and go with little fanfare. Worth it to see Tim Curry working again. That's about the beginning and the end of excitement for it for me.
I work in "the business", and you're mostly right. This is an ill-conceived idea that's more about Hollywood SJW's stroking their own ego's and patting themselves on the back for being "forward thinking".
Hollywood's narcissistic obsessions are ruining the art of storytelling.
Oh I'm sure a huge part of it was to cover every possible diversity base they felt was lacking in the original. That's always been a part of casting anything nowadays since the Cinderella reboot with Brandy.
