I’ve Come to Terms with S4

I love the Scream trilogy. Yes, even 3 (Sue me: I love the cattiness, the camp, and the bombast.) I love them all for different reasons and together they make a fantastic couple of hours of high-adrenaline fun. Spooky meets funny.

When 4 came out I dutifully “liked” it. The same way I dutifully “liked” some of Fox’s X-Men films.

A big part of me not liking it was because of the actress who plays Sid’s cousin. That girl was everywhere at the time and seemed a poor choice for the role. And such a critical role, too. However, in the ensuing years I’ve seen less of her but also more of her—in The Blackcoat's Daughter. That film changed my mind about Roberts.

It fits as a capstone to the original trilogy. I wish they could have gone further with their ideas for 5 and 6, but 4 has a great pace, I love where the characters are at, I love their dynamics, I actually like the teens, and now the only thing that bothers me about Scream 4 is how shiny and “uncanny valley” all of the women over 25 except Neve look.

I still haven’t seen 5 yet! Can’t wait. Unfortunately I have a new puppy who can’t be home alone. TMI.

I've never been a fan of this entry. It never quite felt like a Scream movie to me. Some familiar elements are there (Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette are all on-song), and the feeling of nostalgia as Sidney returns to Woodsboro for the first time in years is nice, but it doesn't quite get there.

Of the new supporting cast, I thought Emma Roberts was pretty good as Jill (Sidney's cousin), and the gorgeous Hayden Panettiere is good as Jill's best friend, Kirby. The rest are okay. The problem for me is that there's no spark like there was in the first three. But I'll be watching Scream 5 for the first time over Halloween, and since I rewatched the first three recently, I thought I'd better give this one another look as well. Sadly, no change. 5/10.

I would agree that it’s missing that Scream spark.

I didn’t go from not really liking it to loving it; I went from not really liking it to not hating it.

How did you like Scream 5? I’ll space out the rest of my response if you didn’t get around to it.

That one I hate. For the inverse reasons I liked 4 at all, mainly: I hate where we find the characters. I hate what happened to Gail and Dewey and I really hate how Dewey became a sad sack cliche alkie. The ghost stuff was stupid as hell and suspension of disbelief was out the window with the superhumanness of one killer. I can’t believe it did well enough to merit a sequel. It was just embarrassing. And the lead actress was way, way out of her depth. They did her no favors by casting her in the role. And who knows what 6 will be like since they let the Sydney actress go.

I did read a Scream 5 script that more or less picks up where 4 left off and it was better than what we got.
