It's a bit confusing considering it's about Mars and not our moon, but technically the word is derived from the fact that we sent humans to the moon, which seemed impossible and has since become to mean in general, "a plan or aim to do something that seems almost impossible."

Personally, I've never heard anyone say it in my life and maybe a better title could have been used for the movie considering it's about going to Mars. But it has certainly helped make us more aware of the word.
