intense religious themes at end ruin this decent comedy

i was misled thinking this was going to be a campy "make fun of armageddon movie" but instead it actually IS an armageddon movie after mostly as a comedian buddy movie. the last 1/3 of the movie turns into a fanatical christian tale of who gets to heaven. there is no joke about it, it's treated real and it doesn't fit the movie at all. the sacrifice instant access to heaven *beep* it just makes a turn into blatant propaganda for the church after a halfway decent flick that i got some chuckles from. its good to see other threads also mentioning how this is despicable. hollywood is special needs shortbus challenged.

You're pretty fixated on things being religious or not, in other words, you're beforehand biased, hence your opinion is rendered mute. imho this was a great production and a very enjoyable movie. See, the difference is that my opinion matters, cause im not biased - yours doesn't.

As a christian I can tell you that it's definitely not a propaganda for the church. It has a lot of crude, gross and offensive humor. The rapture is not considered to even be true by a lot of Chritians(would say most, but I don't have any exact data). You also can't salvage yourself like the movie showed. It's not very biblically accurate.
In my opinion, Rogan and Goldberg(or anyone else in charge of the ideas presented) wanted to have some kind of morale while keeping things insane and stupid along with it. None of them seems to be Christian, or religious in general(expect for Jonah Hill, I think). They weren't planning to make a religious propaganda. It's a Seth Rogan stoner comedy not Left Behind.
Also, here's a review by a Christian website: http://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/film/end .

I think it's kind of ironic that so many people viewed it as something Religious...when in fact the writers & 99.9% of EVERY actor in this movie is an atheist.

This movie, especially the last 1/3, would offend the *beep* out of any Christian. The idea that entrance into Heaven can be earned at all, let alone with a single act of selflessness is contrary to absolutely everything taught in Christianity. Not to mention the half naked women, swearing, and drugs prevalent in this film's version of Heaven.

It's not propaganda, it's mockery.

reply

Yeah, because Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Evan Goldberg all are devout Christians.

reply

It's only Christian propaganda if you believe in that sort of thing. I just took it as a cool piece of humourous fiction. No harm in that. I don't believe in gods, devils, heaven, hell or any of that stuff, but it still makes for some great storytelling.

I agree with everything this guy said. Not sure what the rest of you people are talking about..

I thought the religious themes were throughout the movie. The first person seen going to Heaven is a priest, and Jay keeps talking about religion and quoting the bible, etc. Also, there were crosses put in throughout the movie. As a matter of fact, wasn't one of the joints they smoked shaped like a cross.
I thought all the final act religious stuff was a rift on the religious armageddon movie, "Left Behind." Which I haven't seen, but understood that it was about the non-religious who didn't go to heaven.

Side note: I thought the movie parodied all the different armageddon films and so I thought it was appropriate.

Also, I think the creators of the film are Jewish, so they wouldn't feel obligated to make a Christian themed film. So, I just figured they were taking the piss.

Personally, I don't think it's despcable to express Christian views, because they're saying you should be good to other people, and sacrifice, etc. If they said you should be a *beep* Christian and hate others that aren't like you, then you go to Heaven. I'd have a problem with that. Christianity is just an idea. It's the way that humans use the idea that causes problems. So, in essence, it's really human beings that are *beep* cancers upon the world, they just need a scapegoat to blame in order to spit venom upon others.

Didn't read through all the other posts, but had to say that this wasn't any sort of religious propaganda. It was a satire by non believers And they handled it very well -- without insults or sucker punches to those that do believe. The movie simply asks, 'what if God is real and what would happen to us or how would we handle it if that were the case?'

It was also a satire on hollywood. Notice after the rapture, when they go back to the party, no one at Franco's has even noticed that anything has happened? In other words, no one at that hollywood party, is 'good' enough to get to heaven.
