4:3 aspect ratio on Sky tv

Why the hell is sky showing the movie like this? A movie that should be on a massive screen is shown like a box.

It's how the movie was shot and framed. You're seeing all the intended information. The 16:9 theatrical actually has information cut off the top and bottom, as seen here: https://youtu.be/vNp3Q0AfXRg?t=3190

On Sky, they show an info table about the odd aspect ratio just before Justice League.
Its next run starts in 75 minutes on Sky Premiere (19.2°E), I'll try to grab a screenshot.

"Night on Earth" gets a similar treatment because it's only broadcast in original language and never dubbed (at the director's request).

That's good work. You went above and beyond for the OP.

Thanks. British Sky Cinema (28.2°E) has it in 7 hours, there should be a similar info.
If my recording works, I'll add the UK version later in the day.

It is because Zack Snyder and DC / Warner / HBO made the silly decision to only offer this movie in a super tall IMAX aspect ratio instead of also giving the option to view a version cropped for widescreen.

I guess you could help matters a little if you turned your TV on its side to watch the movie.

reply

It really didn't bother me at all and I stopped noticing very quickly. Unless the movie is shot in 16:9, which very few theatrical films actually are, you're either going to be black bars on the top or the sides. Does it matter where the bars actually are?

reply

The theatrical version had information cut from up and down.

You can zoom the image horizontally and you will have the same exact effect - even better, you will not have horizontal bars either.

reply

I should have seen this coming. Remember the days when widescreen films were shown on older TVs and people got bent out of shape by those black bars at the top and bottom of the screen? Well, now we have higher definition screens and they are wide enough for anything but the widest of widescreen films and people are upset by 4:3 films.
I've had to pass on improved copies of some older films lately because they are being cropped to change the aspect ratio. Of course nobody will be doing that to Citizen Kane but it is apparently AOK for some of my favorite low-budget SF films.

4:3 is the proper aspect ratio for a massive (IMAX) screen.

reply

Imax is wider. This is Super35.

reply

No. Proper IMAX is 4:3. The widescreen imax are the cut down version for smaller theaters.
