Why cant rossi make an American accent?

So many Australian/NZ/British actors find it incredibly easy to do an American accent. But for some reason - maybe shes dumb - Rossi has created a new, creepy accent that is not American no Australian. She sounds like she just isnt moving the roof of her mouth.

H, I always thought she was American or Canadian. Never even had a thought of her being from Australia. I think she has a great accent. I thought the y in anything or everything was just part of her normal accent.

reply

granted im not from america so my ability to tell the accents apart might be a bit limited
but i wasnt aware that she wasnt american
the "anything" ive noticed she says strangely like "anythinn" but that hardly makes her whole accent bad

reply

She's even admitted she can't go back to an Australian accent because it sounds "too weird" after all this time.

If you're basing this off her Better Off Ted character, that's not a good point of reference, because Veronica is a stiff, tightly wound type of person who speaks in a clipped manner. The way she speaks is supposed to sound slightly off to indicate Veronica's craziness.

reply

True! I suppose I never noticed it in anything else probably because she never talked liked that in other shows.

Deal with it!

yeah she's dumb. OP for president.

You must not be American... You do realize that people have different ways of talking, right? Just because someone sounds a little nasal or breathy doesn't mean they're not speaking in a certain accent.

her accent is fine!

the voice of veronica is not her normal talking voice half the time, its supposed to be a bit whispery/stern and odd.

whatever the auditory equivalent of a discerning palate, many people in this thread do not have

When I watched my first episode of AD for the first time last month I cringed when Rossi delivered her lines and quickly came here to imdb to look up what country she was from

Rossi's accent has gotten better in BoT from AD but is still evident. Not that it matters in the end. And I do agree that if they just had her character be from NZ/Aus/South Africa before coming to the US then it would matter even less

I have nothing to say.

I'm pretty sure her character is supposed to sound that way. She's somewhat uptight and cold.

I never actually realized she wasn't American until after I saw a bunch of her projects.

Since none of us move either the soft or hard palate (the 'roof of her mouth') when we speak, this is one of the more ridiculous and foolish posts ever written on the IMDB to date. Both parts of the palate are rigid when we speak.

Portia de Rossi is gifted with accents. The single word she speaks which belies her American accents is the word 'anything.' No matter how she makes the attempt, it always comes out 'ennything.' She's an outstanding actress who makes her characters believable in every role. Whether they're meant to be hated or loved, they're wonderful.
