And to give a little more information; I didn't like the first movie at all the first time I watched it, it only grew on me 10 years later. But even so, it's certainly not great.
I thought MI2 was completely unwatchable, and 4 was not much better. I just saw it yesterday and was so bored and disappointed I wanted to turn it off, but just thought I'd suffer through it to the end. I just don't get it(how so many can like this movie), I love Brad Bird's previous films, but this was not very good.
The only movie in the series I believe is good is MI3. And I'm not a huge fan of J.J. Abrams, did not like Star Trek into Darkness very much. The 2009 reboot or whatever it's called, was entertaining when I saw it with my family in theater, but watching now on tv, it is rather comical and just over the top in some places.
I can only imagine that it cannot be very easy to make a good movie, just writing a good story/script is extremely difficult, but we have to start doing better because MI4, Star Trek into Darkness and Skyfall are just not cutting it, even when it comes to basic entertainment.
I don't expect every film to be Citizen Cane, The Godfather or Casablanca, but we need to make more movies like Hotel Rwanda, Slumdog Millionaire and the Pianist, recent films that are pretty good and may stand a chance at becoming classics.

My list merely reverses the top two. The reason is, that when I watched the first movie as a kid, I didn't care about the plot holes. Watching the fourth as an adult? I mean, jeez, how many times does an elbow have to audibly break before it stops working...?
The third and the fourth... Couldn't tell you. About as memorable as a night out at a vodka bar. At least, for my taste!

This is a tough one for me. But in a nutshell, 1,2 and 3 were good and 4 was disappointing. 1 had a good story, 2 had good action, 3 had a bit of both and 4 had neither.
