Downey Jr admits Iron Man 2 is a pure classic

Don't buy the MSNBC type spin on any other commentary, fake article. He's proud of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 and rightfully so. Both films were the best of each summer that they were released and he fully admits that Tony Stark is probably the best character he's ever played. The above article mentions how much he enjoyed doing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Shane Black and looks forward to delivering ANOTHER great Iron Man film making him a PERFECT three for three with the character.

Pure classic is a arbitrary call but it is a high quality film on every level.

More and more people are coming around to this point of view.

A classic? IM2? Really?

This mess of a sequel doesn't even hold up against the first IM film which I consider to be good. But even the first IM film I wouldn't categorize as being a "classic."

The first IM film was a step in the right direction for live action super hero films in trying to stay true to the source material while at the same time bringing the character up to date. In that respect I give IM1 a lot of credit for doing a masterful job.

IM2 was just a sloppy sequel. Lots of explosions, lots of CGI special FX, lots of actions scenes and sexy ladies running around without really adding anything to the franchise. Too much and nothing at all.

Avengers redeemed IM and Black Widow after this over the top, eye-rolling, ridiculously silly sequel.

reply

Right, because the first film had NO CGI FX at all...

And what's wrong with them anyway?

reply

I didn't say the first film didn't use CGI.

But if that's all you have to go on with a very flimsy script, 2-dimensional characters, and throw-away villains, then what's the point?

Heroes are only as good as the villains they fight.

No one would care about Luke Skywalker if he hadn't thrown down with Darth Vader. Where would Batman be without one of his greatest adversaries the Joker? James Bond wouldn't be quite so interesting if all his adversaries were bumbling thugs who couldn't string together a coherent thought.

IM2 had crap villains. Justin Hammer was so incompetent I find it extremely difficult to believe ANYONE would allow his company to design weapon systems for them.

Mickey Rourke's version of Backlash was just downright embarrassing to watch. I remember the comic book version of Backlash had a cool, skin tight costume similar to Spider-Man's. IM2's version of Backlash seemed like they pulled some lame ass Russian villain from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. Mickey's greasy haired, pocked marked face and crappy costume that looked like it was made by a group of teenage fan boys in their basement with pieces of junk cobbled together in 3 days in a mad dash to get the suit ready for filming. Yuck.

Lord of the Rings proved that CGI could be put to good use in film IF someone knows how to use them the right way.

IM2 was just a 2 hour video game. Lots of eye candy, and almost nothing in the way of story development. Pretty much exactly the same as Michael Bay's crap-tastic live action Transformers films.

I liked Hammer, but I did feel the faulty weapons joke at his expense in the final battle was a bad idea.

Again, Vanko's whip array *was* "cobbled together" from equipment he had lying around. That was the whole point. That was why Hammer wanted him; Vanko had the smarts but not the funding.

reply

I can see your point about Vanko's jury rigged gear. So, in that respect, I'll give you that.

Maybe if in the film they showed Vanko developing his gear to more closely resemble either Blacklash (with the skin tight, sleek costume) or even the Crimson Dynamo, that might have made more sense to me.

It just seems most of the live action super hero films present a much more watered down version of certain characters.

Put it another way - Let's say they decided to remake Spider-Man (yet again). But this time they presented a young hispanic kid with no powers and no costume. Just him wearing jeans and a t-shirt who is great at parkour and uses grappling hooks to climb.

They can call him Spider-Man all they want, but it really woudn't BE Spider-Man.

That's the problem I have with many of these live action super hero films. When you start changing the characters so much that they don't even resemble anything like the source material... that's really bad.

While you're considering Robert Downey, Jr.'s great roles, you might consider Chaplin (Academy Award Nominee for Best Actor, BAFTA winner), Wonder Boys, or even A Scanner Darkly. Not super hero movies, but each of which gave RDJ a bit more of a role to actually work with. His work in Natural Born Killers was also very good. I'm sure the Iron Man movies were fun to do, and have made him much richer, but if you want to see his best work, see some of the above.

RDJr knows what's up!
