I haven't finished the movie yet and opted to do a bit of research on the net - only to realize that everything in this film is fake. I mean, when they took the 'ancient aliens' route - that's when I figured I'd do a bit of research, because at this point I wasn't sure if any of the 'real footage' was real anymore.

I dunno but... I have an issue with films which claim that they are based on facts and are actually not. I mean... if you are going to take the mockumentary route, you should say as much. The WORST thing is, the studio even planted fake news in the actual town to make it seem like this really was based on facts.

This is particularly disturbing given the current environment, where US media/government are spreading fake news even more so than they did during the Iraq invasion.

It should have been - but with studio planting fake news in Alaska, and the film telling you that numerous videos/audio recordings are not a reenactment, but are a part of the evidence gathered by a phychologist - and even taking steps not to credit the actors in those videos - morons who don't do a follow up research on this will believe everything they see.

If you know anything about this world - it's full of such morons. As such, this film is no longer just a movie - it's the very definition of fake news mixed in with 'reenactment scenes'.

"What pushes Fourth Kind from the merely bad into the actually insulting was the filmmakers' insistence that the documentary evidence was real. Actors from the "documentary" portions of the movie are uncredited, and many media outlets are still reporting that the footage is real. There was even an ill-fated Web campaign to create false professional credentials and publications for Abigail Tyler, but after investigative reporter Kyle Hopkins revealed them as fakes they were taken down."

If the radio broadcast station that aired that play also paid people to fly gigantic drones (or perhaps inflatable UFO shaped balloons at that time) to further cement the illusion that their play was legit, then yeah - I'd have been pissed.
BTW - Wells had nothing to do with the production/showcasing of that play. Wells wrote 'sci-fi' on the cover of his book - not 'non-fiction'.

I agree. My contempt for this issue began with the reprehensible Blair Witch Project, which relied on human stupidity and insisted that it was “real.”

Rule of thumb: any and all media containing “found footage” is complete bullshit and has no respect for its audience; yet the filmmakers think they are cool and smart.

Here’s an idea. Let’s make a movie about hunting down assholes who make movies like this and slowly torturing them to death, with heaps of humiliation (e.g., “You can either cut your dog’s balls off, or slice off either 1 of your arms.”) I’d love to see that movie. How about you?

I think we should also add 99% of the politicians, mainstream media editors/anchors and the supposed fact-checkers into that list. The amount of lying and bullshit has skyrocketed in the last 3 years - it's a freaking pandemic of lying and fake bull.
