Adam Sandler, wasted career?

I loved this film, but the thing that struck me most was how good Sandler was in it.

Clearly there is some amount of self-deprivation when Simmonds, and others comment on how awful his films are. But seeing a dry, witty and rather low key Sandler, bouncing off other excellent comics, made me wonder whether Sandler has wasted his career a little. Could he have been doing more work of this standard instead of embarrassing himself as Billy Madison, Zohan or like Simmonds the 'Merman'.

Just look at Sandler's filmography and notice the budget and gross for each film. Every time he strayed away from his familiar comedies the movie performed poorly. Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish, Reign Over Me, and Funny People all were huge disappointments financially even though they're considered to be Sandler's best performances critically.

Because of this I really don't blame him for how his career has played out. America has spoken...they want the same old Sandler over and over again. I just hope he at least continues to sprinkle in good work in between his paycheck movies.

I guess if enough people in this thread feel that "being the highest paid actor in Hollywood" or whatever is a reason enough for keep doing *beep* films, Adam Sandler may feel that way too. I don't know what that tells you, a messed-up culture. I mean, it's one thing to sell out in order to get rich. But once you're FILTHY RICH as someone like Adam Sandler has been for years, what's the point of going on? Does he want to make good films or just compete with other actors in how much money he makes? Seems very boring. He doesn't even need to make 'serious' films, why not just make good comedy? He's rich enough to choose, but he won't, apparently. He chooses to just make more money. Sad.

He gets no pity from me bitching about his career in this film, then goes on to make *beep* like Jack and Jill and That's My Boy.

reply

Very Simple.

Jack and Jill and his other lowbrow movies made money.

Funny People didn't.

Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish, Reign Over Me also didn't.

Serious Sandler is better then "Funny" Sandler

How is Funny People a celebration of his career? If anything it's the opposite.

cuz it's like a good happy movie and it shows him doing prank calls and early stand up, and you can laugh about his stupid movies

reply

Billy Madison (unlike most of Sandler's movies) _is_ of this high standard. It's just a very different type of movie.

Maybe you mean *self-deprecation*, not "self-deprivation". Good luck with the ESL classes...
